Not sure why.
I know they're super rare but I caught many of the rare fish and saw the Goliath beetle a number of times (managed to catch just one because I stupidly scared the others off).
I was expecting to come across some rainbow stags during my Island hopping spree since I did a lot of my trips in the late evening/night but nothing.
Is anyone else in the same predicament?
Any tips on getting them to spawn?

When I was on my friend's NH island, I found one among the drone beetles. I just hugged the coastline and used that as my hunting ground.

I caught my rainbow stag on the mystery islands, where I just did the same thing by running around and scaring off obsolete beetles.

Do they spawn on all types of trees besides the coconut ones?

I just caught one today on my island. It’s the first one I’ve seen in a long time though and it spawned on a normal tree

@cheezu
Yeah any tree. I caught mine on a normal tree but then I caught the other one on a coconut tree. I like hunting on the beaches since if you line up your palm trees, it's so much easier to see it and understand the depth perception (which I'm sorta sucky at).

Lol I've seen one but too late since I was running on my beach and saw a glimpse of the rainbow stag on my coconut tree before it flew away :( now I can't seem to find it again tho...

I've had better luck on mystery islands.

Pluck all the flowers and chop all the trees except the coconuts so that beetles would spawn most of the time. Just do repeated laps around it. Mosquitos and water bugs can also appear but it's better than trying to spawn them on your own island.

I think they spawn on both coconut and regular trees. They will spawn even on rainy days.
I admit my first rainbow stag that I found is in my island but it takes a long time to find it since the island is big and lots of other bugs can spawn.

I suggest it is better to go to a mystery island. Leave 2 or 3 regular trees and coconut trees, then chop down the other trees. Pluck all the flowers and break all stones. If it rains, rainbow stag will still spawn, I tried this method last night, it was raining on the mystery island and the time is around 8pm, I found tons of them but still required around 5-10 minutes each time for one to spawn on the tree for me as there are other potential bugs spawning too (drone beetle, Atlas moth).

Good luck and I hope you will catch one soon!

I caught one yesterday during my hunt for the goliath beetle ^_^ coconut tree for me but I think they spawn on any tree

I caught one yesterday without really looking for it, didn't know they were around but I saw a weird bug and it turned out to be this :)

I caught mine at the start of June without knowing what it was because it was so dark. The next time I got one was on a mystery island. The one I still have never seen is the Goliath beetle ):

Yeah, it's funny that we sometimes catch something and it's completely unexpected.
I'll try to go on a hunt today.

The first week of June, I saw maybe two of them, but both times, I was running towards the screen so I ended up chasing them both away. Only this week, I was able to finally catch one. I didn't actively look for them since I didn't even know they existed, I always assumed the bugs that were on the trees were either the Atlas Moth or the Drone Beetle. I was also quite lucky and I got the Goliath Beetle, but this took quite a while to find since my island does not have a lot of coconut trees.

I found one by chance on a coconut tree, probably first or second day of june, luckily i caught it, because I haven't seen any since. i don't really know why, I've caught every other insect and fish several times, even the rare ones. Even hercules beetles have only shown up twice, so maybe they just get blotted out by all the spawning butterflies on my island

They aren't very colorful this time around. Probably since all the bug and fish aim to look more realistic this time.

It was harder for me to find the goliath beetle, though. My advice is to put the camera in the one low angle where you can look a good distance towards the horizon. Do that, and always walk up/left/right whenever possible. Try to limit walking down, because you can't actually see the trees that way until you're close to them. Just try to scan all of the trees possible while you're still far away.

I am having the opposite problem. I have seen/caught quite a few rainbow stag but have yet to see a single Goliath.
