According to popular sites, the way to grow black roses is to plant red and orange together, or red and red together. (Odd combos include pink and purple, or blue and red.) But, this morning, I found a single black rose growing beside a red and a yellow.

Just a red and a yellow. There were no other flowers close by.

Are villagers able to plant hybrids!? I have no other explanation.

I think the rules changed or just added new ways to obtain hybrids and some of the guides you find online might just contain info from past games.

Idk. Hybrids is another subject were not sure of about NL at the moment.

It seems to be that any color combo can create any hybrid type, but there are some that will have a higher chance of getting a specific one. I have gotten an orange rose from R/Y and pink from R/W, but a black tulip from a R/W.

They've added genetics in flowers in this game, so perhaps these two roses have "ancestors" that could produce black roses?

if the yellow rose was made from a red and yellow "parents" it will have the red rose passive gene, which means that it can be used to make hybrids as both red and yellow.

I think everyone should make notes as their flowers grow.

And the best way to test it is to remove the hybrid and see if you get another hybrid as well from the odd parents. If another appears again, then you should know that means they don't follow most guides online now and go with genes more than anything else.

But geez, this is almost as bad as to when they introduced IV breeding and EV training in pokemon lol

GAH! It's so confusing! :p Can you imagine how massive a chart showing possible breeding outcomes for all the flowers would be with this new "flower gene" thing. Ok... so this R and this Y rose can breed a Y rose, but that Y rose is actually a Y(R) rose becasue it has the red gene. So two Y(R) roses could be used to make a Black rose. Then could this Black rose (which I'm assuming has Yellow genes) be used with Red roses to make Orange? Could we potentially use two Black (which both have Red and Yellow genes) to create orange? All of a sudden Black and White could create pink???

There's no way I'm remembering which of my flowers have which genes. :p

The flowers carry the traits of their parents, so it's almost impossible to track every single flower. If you are looking to breed a certain color, just follow the color combination rules, because you're likely to get flowers confused with other flowers. Avoid the headache and follow the chart!

That's what I'm thinking!

I follow the chart and I still sometimes get confused..lol
I've noticed that I get a lot of pink roses so they must be more common.
This is kind of off topic, but I wonder how much fertiliser helps hybrids. I've not upgraded my T&T enough yet.

I was surprised myself this morning as I found I got my first black lily from a group of orange lilies. Good to know hybrids just might happen anywhere, makes some flowers a little more useful (perhaps the yellow violets will now have purpose!).

It's absolutely useless.

You can get 5 new flowers per day (I think). If you have a small batch of flowers that you try to breed every day, you're going to get 3-5 new flowers from them anyway, whether you use the fertilizer or not.

I guess its only use is for people who have hundreds of flowers in their town and don't use the Beautiful Town ordinance. You'd have to water all of your flowers pretty much every day, so if you wanted a specific hybrid, your only option would be to plant fertilizer where you wanted it...
