Going island hopping? PLEASE HELP! - Sub-personality research

Oh wow this is super interesting. I've been hoping there was a little more nuance to the personalities this time around, so I'm glad to see this! I'm going island hopping in a little bit and hopefully I'll run into some lazies so I can help out.

You are missing Filbert from your form and spreadsheet by the way--he's been on my island for weeks so I couldn't fill it out, but since he's my lazy, I noticed it.

I didn't see this dialogue on the form. When I met Sherb he said "AH! There's someone on this island!" Note: I found Sherb after I got my first campsite villager. I would show you a picture but it says the file size is too large. (If anyone knows how to fix this, please tell me :))

It is possible the guide could be wrong, especially since it doesn't bother to list the personalities to identify it. I've seen pictures of the guide and already found information that contradicts or is lacking when compared to datamined info.

That's very true, and I think quite likely. I definitely trust the datamined info more than the guide!

Yeah, definitely. What does the datamined info say about these "sub-personalities"? I feel that my Sherb and Erik are a little different, but then again, Sherb just moved in a couple days ago so I haven't talked to him as much.

Also, I've noticed some villagers prefer certain activites. My first island had singing by my uchi and normal villagers on a daily basis whilst my 2nd island had none at all despite owning a bunch of normal villagers and an uchi. I came up with the theory that some villagers prefer certain activities after I got Julian and Marina in my 2nd village and predicted them to be singers based off popular clips of the them. Everyday they sing meanwhile my other smug and normal villagers like Huck and Coco, have not sung once. I have noticed that Coco prefers reading and tree examining. Huck is almost always exercising as well, so maybe there's a correlation between the 2 sub personalities and activities.

I've noticed that Reneigh tends to workout, run, and drink lemonade, while Frita tends to sing and sit under trees. (These are both Uchi villagers). Any correlation?

If you look at this spreadsheet, you can check for yourself. Their personality type (music, education, fashion, etc.) is listed under the _9eea1288 column. This likely determines their idle actions (singing, inspecting flowers, reading, working out, etc.), but it could also influence dialogue. Right now there's no sure way to be sure what this sub-personality actually governs, afaik.

Then their talk type can be found under _33af13e1. We don't really know what this setting does, but it's hypothesized that it might affect dialogue.

Deli had the nature line when I encountered him. Since I did this a while ago I don't remember what other things he said, but I filled this out in the sheet

Aha! Thank you! That's been rectified.

Just wanted to clarify a little of what is said here.
Personalities: Lazy, Smug, Cranky, Jock, Normal, Peppy, Snooty, and Uchi
_9eea1288 column relates to villager "hobbies/interests"- as of right now, datamining has revealed that it relates to "changes in villager behavior", such as activities, objects villagers will use, etc. It is unknown if it relates to dialogue but I haven't seen dialogue in the game that would imply that is the case.
_33af13e1 is the state of a boolean called NpcTalkType. It is unknown what this does at the moment but it is theorized that this is the "sub-personality" mentioned by the guidebook because it fits perfectly into the category of there being two possible sub-personalities per personality. However, players frequently report anecdotal evidence of villagers with the same value still seemingly having different dialogue options.

Also, I've noticed some villagers prefer certain activites.

Yes. This relates to the _9eea1288 column, or "interests". For example, Ninji (dataminer responsible for the recent stuff about redd, leif, etc) looked into this a bit and stated that nature-type villagers are 3x as likely to pause and look to the sky than the other options.

All of this research operates on the assumption that sub-personalities do effect the probability or kind of dialogue used by a villager, because these kinds of differences are frequently reported by players. The only way to prove this is by either a) finding an obvious piece of logic via datamining, which is difficult or b) sufficiently proving it via data like this, which is also difficult, but can be crowd-sourced.

My personal guess is that the NpcTalkType will be the key and correlate to different probabilities of certain dialogue responses, as there does not seem to be enough dialogue in the game to support what would functionally be 16 different personalities. This would explain the seemingly random nature of the reports and would align with how villager hobbies/interests work as well. We'll have to wait and see.

This was addressed on page 1 of this thread. The dialogue option is there, sans the 'ah!' Please pick the option that says "There's someone on this island! You're here visiting too?! I'm VILLAGER. You're NAME from ISLAND? Neat! I didn't expect to make a friend here! This island is so cool, ."

I clarified this on the form input page. Because entries have already been submitted with that option, please pick the one that's missing the exclamation. Sorry for the trouble.

Oh thank you! I'm sorry I didn't notice this.

I’m going to go back through my screenshots in case I have anything to contribute now, odds are I won’t see a villager on an island tour for a very long time, I’ve almost got all my favourites and the last few I’ll amiibo in. I will try making a note of whether campsite villagers (on first invite) open with different dialogue lines within personality types, as this is something I can easily do with a silly collection of amiibo and nothing better to do. I know it won’t add to the data pool in this first instance, but I may as well do something since I have been desperate to know. Are you sharing this data gather elsewhere?
Also, while I am sure the guide could easily be wrong, and I don’t doubt it has it’s errors (I know I’ve found inconsistencies), I also think it’s mentioned because there are sub-types. I don’t think it’s confirmatory bias, we’d already established that the interests are clear to see before most of us had even looked at the data, I think there’s a likelihood that dialogue frequency does vary between villagers and as we have an unidentified value, it’s reasonable speculation I think.

Yeah, I don't get villagers from Islands - but I absolutely could also help with some personalities using amiibo cards! Just have a couple more villagers to finish moving in, and then I'd be free to try it every day.

i just filled in some responses! i had some screenshots saved when i was island hopping a lot, i hope it helps 😄

Found 6 lazy villagers while island hopping- filled out the form for all of them ^-^ Also took screenshots of the rest of the personalities in case this research ever expands!

edit: found some old screenshots from when I invited Rodeo- went back and filled it for him too!

Man I wish this was around when I did my 459 trips, 12% of my encounters were lazy so could have gotten some good info probably.

We're at 60 responses so far, which is excellent- thank you so much, everyone. So far the distribution looks pretty much entirely random, but it might be too early to say. We'll see.

EDIT: I closed the form. Thanks everyone so much for your help! The distribution was indeed random and I have some information from other users about the subtypes but I want to do some of my own research during the next few days and talk with those people to get a definitive reading for a full post here. Let's get it done!
