Future update discussion/speculation

I don't mind paid DLC, but it should be for brand new content for the series. Making us pay for returning content from previous games would be a really low move in my opinion.

Stupid question but are we getting an update in June or July? I kinda assumed we weren’t getting anything until July due to the events happening in June such as the wedding event and the museum event.

Anyways, I would like to see additional buildings such as the Roost, dream hotel, and police station come back.

I have high hopes for the unused dock being something special, perhaps there we'll be able to travel to Tortimer Island again? When they utilized the hidden beach, and that second story in the museum, it gave me hope that these small things DO have a plan.

I'm also hopeful for Shampoodle, but with the nook mile hair customizations I get the unfortunate feeling we won't... I was hoping for a customizable color slider, maybe more hairstyles... We'll see though.

I definitely think that in June/July, we're going to see a lot of Summer-themed updates. Not just seasonal stuff, I am thinking more like what we saw with May Day, where new vendors were introduced, as well as hedges and bushes. I have very high hopes for diving suits. Would love to see the mermaid series return. Maybe the tropical fruits, too.

I want Bananas on my Island. Maybe with craftable Banana furniture.

Also...

I want these trees.

i feel like some of the old shops returning will be a given. gracie is a staple, and with label doing the fashion checks now i feel like she either might be a middleman for gracie to sell their product through the able sisters or for her to scout islands on gracie's behalf. i neeeed the princess and sweet sets back!!

there are a lot of other new leaf features i miss too. the dream suite is a must considering how customizable islands are now, so there has to be a way for people to visit others more easily. i really wish tortimer's island would return as well, if only just for the island tours as they were really fun. being able to have a lot of people on your island at once is cool but there's such an immense lack of anything to actually do with everyone when they're there.

if i were to spend money on expansions they'd need to include permanent expansions rather than just a few more items or events... in sims terms, i want proper expansion packs instead of just stuff packs lol. before the game first released i was expecting for there to maybe be another, more city-scaped island that would house all the big stores that you might not necessarily be able to fit on your island; kind of like the main street in new leaf. or just something that fundamentally changes how the game is played... maybe having a second island on your map you can build a bridge between and have twice as much space? i'd need something along those lines in addition to more items and possibly villager species for me to drop money on it.

it's really hard to say what they might add because there's literally SO MUCH that is missing from new horizons, and we're not even 2 months into the games release. i'm sure what they do add won't disappoint either way.

I'm hoping they bring back diving and static islands like the ones from the Gamecube game and New Leaf. The idea of having more islands to visit that have purpose (beyond the random island hopping for villagers/materials/catching) is extremely appealing to me.

I was so disappointed by the random islands in NH. Was so excited to go to the first one, thinking I'd find something like in NL... and there it was, just a plain basic island with only my native fruit and a villager who didn't even have a house. :(
I'd be happy just with some more variety in the random islands. There's what, 4 or 5 different islands you can get? They could do some themed islands, or islands with special stuff on them!

This was a fantastic post! I'm completely on board with all of this. Your last section about things that you think would never happen, I could easily see Lief/Label/Kicks either getting their own shops or joining others!

Your hedge idea is also really cool... I kind of need it now...
The problem with the hedges is my town would quickly get overrun with multiple hedges as I wouldn't be able to have the recipe and not use it :P

I'm expecting (based on the data mine and how they already got this most recent update correct), that we're getting Brewster and Gyroids.

I'm thinking we'll get an update for June-July as a solstice update: winter and summer, considering we can now play in both hemispheres. So maybe they'll introduce swimming + new sea creatures (because of Summer in the NH) and Brewster's Café (like, drink some cool/hot drinks depending on where you're playing!). I also think we'll get a new NPC visitors as well (I'm hoping it's Katrina). Also, I think it's likely we'll get a new, upagraded Nook's Cranny with (maybe) Leif's store inside. Also, I'm pretty hopeful about cooking, but I'm thinking this'll be introduced in November (for Thanksgiving, probably).

What am I hoping for? I'd love for events introduced in past series. If I'm not mistaken, 'sports fair' or the morning aerobics is a summer event, so it could be introduced now for the NH. Considering that villagers already do aerobics on their own, it would be SO cool they brought this back for the entire summer (like in GCN). It would also be really cool, because they could bring in Copper and Booker for this event. In the past, Copper was in charge but it'd be cool if they had Booker involved as well. I'd love for either sport's fair or morning aerobics to make a comeback. I would also love it if they brought back the flea market from WW. I would have loved for this event to be seasonal, but I'd settle for it to come back, period. I'd also love it if they brought back Kitty and her mom! They were some of my favorite NPC's :'). It'd be also cool if we saw a 'teenage' Kitty! I'd also hope if they could introduce more games with villagers, like hide and seek from NL and to let us invite villagers to our home!

What do I not want back? Grass wearing out (awful feature).

I’ve said this before in other threads, but I honestly think the steady re-adding of NPCs and features is very much intentional: you’re on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere and you’re steadily building it up over time, so it makes sense that over time, different NPCs are going to be invited along for different reasons, or furniture and clothing is going to be locked behind different stores and upgrades.

Even the NPCs that appear to have been retired have little hints that eventually they’re going to come to your island (Joan’s stated to have bad knees at the moment, Chip has a fishing boat that he goes out in, and Nat apparently travels in search of rare bugs) so, if they’ve got an amiibo, they’re going to be added at some point.

Anyway, in answer to your questions:
1: I want them to bring back these things:
  • Re-Tail’s auction house and customisation facilities
  • Much more furniture, including the stuff that still hasn’t been brought back from the GameCube version
  • Dream Suite
  • HHA headquarters type thing where you can redesign villagers houses like in HHD
  • Morning Aerobics/Sports Fair (but make the Sports Fair actually interactive this time)
  • Fireworks festivals
  • Bright Nights (but give it an actual purpose)
  • A less obtrusive Nook Lottery
  • Post Office for better postal service facilities
  • Tortimer Island
  • Consoles with mini games on them
  • Something similar to Boondox from WW or the lighthouse from GC... just something that involves doing a little task for someone
  • More villager dialog and interactions, honestly annoys me we can’t do much for them atm.
  • REGION EXCLUSIVE DIALOGUE
  • More Nook upgrades, potentially with new furniture
  • Harriet with the missing hairstyles and Mii Masks
  • Brewster and gyroids

I don’t want them to bring back:
  • Excessively mean villagers
  • Flea Market, unless it’s similar to the thing where you visit a villager house in NL and you can buy certain bits of their furniture
  • NES games (redundant with NSO imo)

2: I’d love it if they added the greenhouse idea somebody mentioned here earlier, and I also like the idea of travelling to other islands for certain NPCs? I’d also like some brand new fruits, like strawberries and pineapples, as well as the ability to make slightly messier paths.

3: if we don’t get another update in the next couple of weeks, I’m gonna say seasonally... until the Hallowe’en-Christmas season comes, then they’ll go back to being monthly. But I’d like them to be monthly?

4: It’s not gonna be the game some people on here seem to want, but it’s going to be much bigger?

5: I’m not entirely sure, but I’m hoping it’s slightly different each time.

6: It’d have to be something like the Octo Expansion in Splatoon 2 rather than something that just mildly expands the game... I’m thinking something like the city from LGTTC, where a load of the other NPCs have shops and where DJ KK does his radio show?

1) i definitely see them bringing stuff like the roost back along with certain npcs like brewster, pascal, etc. a lot of the features and characters that have been in every game up to date that is currently missing will likely make a comeback at some point imo

2) there’s been some speculation about cooking being added into the game, the evidence being certain dialogue about cooking. while that type of dialogue is not new at all, there does seem to be an abundance of it (at least with my villagers) so maybe cooking and food recipes will be added in at some point?

3) we get maybe 2 updates a month for fixes and patches and all that jazz but as for big updates that introduce new stuff, my guess would be maybe every 2-4 months or so?

Loving reading all of these responses! I got busy today, so wasn't able to respond to them as they were coming in, but there are so many good ideas here! And as a whole, people are more optimistic about the updates than I thought, which is great to see.

1) What old things do you think they'll bring back? What do you hope stays gone?

Diving! Other shops like Shampoodle and the Dream suite! And the Police box!

Bunny Day Eggs need to go forever

2) What new features do you think they'll introduce to the series?
Not new, but diving

3) How frequent do you think updates will be?
Every month for big updates but maybe every 2 - 3 weeks

4) When it's all said and done, how much bigger do you expect the game to be? Minor changes from what we have now or completely unrecognizable?
Hopefully much bigger, it feels quite bare bones not gonna lie

5) How do you think holidays will be handled on subsequent years? Exact same event/prizes like past games, or does stuff get added, similar to games like Overwatch?

It would be nice if they could change it up yearly (similar to the zodiac stuff)

6) What would have to be included in a paid dlc, larger style expansion to be worthwhile for you?
Region locked exclusive items

Region exclusive things I definitely forgot about. That would be something that I hope stays gone...

1) What old things do you think they'll bring back?
  • Brewster/gyroids is a no-brainer especially after the datamine lol. The Cafe will probably be its own building like in NL. We'll have to see what it allows you to do. It's also an opportunity to unlock dialogue from our vendors as well as Isabelle who currently seems to only exist in the game for fan service. Maybe you'll even see Rover show up in there from time to time? Joan, Resetti, Tortimer?
  • Diving for sure. That was a big enough feature in NL it only makes sense. And the manila clams, like there has to be something they add to that yknow like why is it just manila clams
  • Eventually maybe a few more villagers we left behind from the Gamecube. Woolio might end up stealing Pietro's spotlight lol. Less likely they'll bring back the special villagers from NL Welcome amiibo but who knows
  • Persimmons, probably once the rest of the shop upgrades come in. One of the variants of Mom's tissue box features the 5 basic fruits, a turnip and a persimmon. This discovery excites me but also makes me wonder what the fruit situation will be if they add more fruits. The tropical fruits in NL were cool cosmetically but they offered nothing special in terms of gameplay - maybe we'll see some sort of solution in cooking but given DIYs like the infused-water dispenser and frying pan idk. I do see a reason for perfect fruit to make a return
  • At least a few classic (or updated versions of classic) sets right? I mean for whatever reason we got the modern wood wall and floor back, just not the furniture set. I can understand the wooden set replaces blue, green and maybe ranch or alpine, the cute set replaces the lovely set, etc... maybe the wooden block set is supposed to replace both modern wood and kiddie?? But we still have things like Gracie's sets, rococo, astro, etc that don't have an equivalent yet. This also applies to some clothing items like the boppers you'd get in NL at firework shows, items like the throwing beans, etc.
  • While I never played HHD, I've understood in that game you could maneuver your character between things placed half a unit away from each other. Like a couch and coffee table, for example. For whatever reason you can't do that in NH. Certainly at some point they'll see reason to add it in?
What do you hope stays gone?
  • While grass wear made towns look natural in a sense, and it was a little weird when I saw the NH direct/trailer to see just a solid green carpet for grass, I'm glad they made that decision ultimately. Maintaining the dirt paths I had in NL required regular use and I had to be careful to not run on the grass too much if I didn't want it to disappear. Now you can just place down a dirt path and it's done.
2) What new features do you think they'll introduce to the series?
  • I'd hope there would be a way to be able to design villagers' houses for them, like it would be a request they'd ask you for at maybe max or close to max friendship and that could unlock original wall/flooring/furniture for your starter villagers.
3) How frequent do you think updates will be?
  • I don't mind all that much at this rate. Game's only been out for two months, and sure they could take this a lot faster but they're choosing not to. Monthly, seasonally, in-between, whatever
4) When it's all said and done, how much bigger do you expect the game to be? Minor changes from what we have now or completely unrecognizable?
  • Somewhere in between minor changes and completely unrecognizable. The core day-to-day gameplay seems to be pretty much set - doing your rounds, checking the shops, bug hunting and fishing, crafting, talking to villagers - yet the datamined info seems to suggest some pretty hefty additions to island life. They might be just cosmetic like bushes or they could be more interesting, but I don't think a lot of groundbreaking changes will come that shake up the daily formula all that much.
5) How do you think holidays will be handled on subsequent years? Exact same event/prizes like past games, or does stuff get added, similar to games like Overwatch?
  • No way of knowing now, but I'd like it to be where once they add in the holiday, like they've done Bunny Day, from then forward you can just play it like in past games without another update. That said, I really wonder how they're going to do Bunny Day next year, since the goal was to collect the DIY recipes, which everyone who played the event now has. If they kept it the same next year there'd be nothing for us to do who played it this year, but they also need to make the recipes available to people who play next year. That's the thing about the seasonal DIY recipes, it's one and done and you always have them - that'll make some seasonal/yearly events tricky.
6) What would have to be included in a paid dlc, larger style expansion to be worthwhile for you?
  • I'm generally not the kind of person to pay for anything I don't need, and I don't expect there to be paid DLC for NH (you could transfer PC items for free if you played PC, and Welcome amiibo for NL was free [granted amiibos aren't], and aren't we already paying for NSO) but it would have to be something pretty darn substantial. Like basically a new game substantial, at which point might as well just make a new game lol

Stupid question but are we getting an update in June or July? I kinda assumed we weren’t getting anything until July due to the events happening in June such as the wedding event and the museum event.

Anyways, I would like to see additional buildings such as the Roost, dream hotel, and police station come back.

The museum event is happening now. The only update added event scheduled for June that we know of is the wedding season event.

I personally feel like we'll get an update in June because of that.

Like the others, I miss the Cafe. Its such a cute building and I know a lot of people would make cute little areas.
I wanna dive, even jump off the dock haha.
Gracie would be nice. I loved the princess and rococo sets
Katrina
I wanna play hide and seek so bad
I hope the snowman is in the winter season. I like making him and his cranky dialog if he feels he's disproportionate
honestly, a lot of other things, I just can't name them

1) What old things do you think they'll bring back? What do you hope stays gone?
Bring back: Diving, all of the missing NPCs, more furniture, gyroids, the tropical fruit, hide and seek, rude villagers, new villagers (both existing species and not)
Keep gone: Animal tracks/grass wear or the random patches of dirt you could do nothing about in NL,

2) What new features do you think they'll introduce to the series?
I know farming (vegetables etc.) has been datamined so I'm really excited for that! I'd also love the ability to design villager house interiors like HHD.

3) How frequent do you think updates will be?
Every month for the next year seems possible since it builds hype online lol, but slower after that.

4) When it's all said and done, how much bigger do you expect the game to be? Minor changes from what we have now or completely unrecognizable?
It'll overall be minor imo, but it'll be more like the AC we expected to receive if that makes sense. Like if the game started at 60%, it's now at 70% and the minor things will add together to be the last 30%, but they're smaller scale things.

5) How do you think holidays will be handled on subsequent years? Exact same event/prizes like past games, or does stuff get added, similar to games like Overwatch?
I'm not sure, I could see it going either way. I wouldn't be surprised if they made like 3 different sets of easter items and just rotated them around what was available each year. It also wouldn't surprise me if we got new stuff each year considering how pocket camp keeps getting new stuff a few years after launch.

6) What would have to be included in a paid dlc, larger style expansion to be worthwhile for you?
Possibly, it really depends on what it includes. I kinda hope they don't though.

I have answers to your questions, but I don't think they're particularly unique.

I am also wondering about future paid DLC, however. If we're getting fairly regular content for free, what would they think is worth money? Certainly not holidays or events. What does that leave? I doubt they'd paywall special villagers. Which leaves items... How many items would be worth paying money for? Would we just get them, or get access to them? It's hard to say how they'll walk the "fairness" line, should they release paid DLC.

It's also possible that they're just counting on selling tons of amiibo. Maybe they'll introduce amiibo-only villagers, and introduce a mad scramble for them. People have already accepted that model, so it wouldn't be a stretch.
