bro same! they aren’t in-season for me anymore but they were constantly spawning on my island during winter. it got to the point where i honestly got a bit annoyed every time i saw one swimming around.

The oarfish, man! I swear I find the stupid thing every time I hunt for a specific fish. Tuna? No, oarfish. Blue marlin? Oarfish. An extremely common and easy-to-find fish that I need to catch to complete a Nook Miles + goal? Oarfish. At least they sell for a lot.
Another thing I learned since starting my new island on the Southern Hemisphere and playing this game in winter for the first time is that ranchu goldfish are MUCH easier to catch in winter because of the limited number of fish that appear in ponds. I always wanted a ranchu goldfish model but was petrified of catching 3 of them since before, with my Northern Hemisphere islands, I spent DAYS trying to get just one of them to donate to the Museum. In winter, I got all 3 of them, as well as the one to donate. Needless to say my mind was blown.

Omg I need to visit your island again once I have enough fishbait. I have yet to catch the Oarfish!
ive had two islands, the first one i had to quit and when i came back to the game i deleted the first and created a second island. what ive noticed about the fishing thing is that each island has its own certain fish that it will spawn more than others. my first island it was turtles that i adore! i had so many turtles i decided to use them as fencing LOL! this time the fish of island choice is the dorado, which gets quite a few bells. i cant go fishing without catching at least 5 of them everyday

It took me one year to catch the barreleye fish, I’m not even exaggerating. I really thought it didn’t exist at some point and I wasted hundreds and hundreds of fish bait for that little demonic fish. Then, one night, I saw this little shadow in the sea and I was like: yeah let’s try, it’s going to be another mackerel like always…IT WAS HIM, THAT STUPID BARRELEYE FISH! So don’t give up, just be very patient and who knows, maybe you will catch them without even trying
I've caught most of the rare fish on accident, lol.
I had @/dizzy bone visit my island to catch a string fish and she bought like 100 or so bait. I TTed to a thunderstorm and terraformed a tiny river-cliff-waterfall for her. I think she caught it under 20 fishing bait which was unsuspected.
She did the same thing again to catch the crabs and got them in a pinch.

I’ve caught a lot of the rare ones on accident.
I don’t actively work on my fish completion though.
However when I try to catch a certain fish for decoration purpose, that’s when I can’t catch any. Took me like 200 bait for the soft shell turtle
The plan was catching two, one for the museum and one for deco, but I can’t go through all that again.

I have caught all the fish in game. I have played ac since the gc version and I have a method I always use. The last few days of the month I look up all fish/bugs/deep sea creatures available for the next month and write them down/type them in a file on my pc. I write down the location, time of day, shadow size and bubble pattern where applicable. So I have all the info I need on hand. My goal is to get them all by the end of the month but I usually manage it in a week give or take a couple days. The first of everything I catch goes to blathers so by years end those sections of the museum are done. Some say they are easier to catch on mystery islands but I got everything on my own island. And I only used bait on a few of the rare ones. The hardest ones for me were the golden trout and the barreleye.
