Well, I am optimistic that assist trophies could be cut and reworked as main characters should the demand be high enough.
But I think King K. Rool makes more sense to vote for because he has a large enough fan base to make my vote worthwhile. I can't imagine many people voting for Midna or Ghirahim. Plus they are single entries in the zelda series.

Resetti would likely be the only character that could get added. He's equipped with a pick-axe and lungs.
But Jingle utilising his magic sack could totally work. Use it as a parachute, a grab like Nabbit in the NSMBU stage, defence by climbing in? And it's chock full of furniture to throw at opponents. Also antlers hurt. :3
^I put a lot of thought into this a while ago and made it work. And now Nintendo knows this.
Tom Nook is the most iconic character of the series that has that "I will murder you" potential next to Villager (who's pretty much been on every game cover besides New Leaf where they used the two new people for the new models). Isabelle's great and all but she's only been in one game so she doesn't have a huge legacy that should take priority over other's. Tortimer could just shout "HORF" at people, but he's an old turtle so he couldn't really do much, plus he doesn't have a huge influence on the games. And K.K. has always been a cool cat so he doesn't seem like he would do much, but I guess next to Resetti he'd be 2nd. And as for Resetti, I guess he could do stuff, but, again, Nook should take priority since he's a a much more major character. The Nooklings could take over in building the dream house so that wouldn't be an issue, and have a raccoon wearing a raccoon tail would be legit.
