What is your favourite starter type when you decide to play a new game?

Grass is my favorite of all of the 18 Pokémon types, so that extends to the starters as well.

It's not really a hard rule when it comes to starters since I tend to play different versions and choose different starters for different runs, so I use all of them eventually.

I'd say Fire is second in my preference because Fire tends to be a less common type in the wild. That leaves Water in third, but that said there are some Water starters I love too. Water admittedly feels the least appealing generally because Water-types are so common in the wild.

Order of Preference by Generation

- Kanto:
Blastoise, Venusaur, Charizard
Blastoise is my favorite final form starter ever. I like the concept and versatility of Venusaur. Charizard is cool but overutilized.

- Johto: Feraligatr, Typhlosion, Meganium
Feraligatr and Typhlosion are pretty even and I alternate between the two in Johto runs, though I have a slight preference for Feraligatr generally. Meganium is pretty but I don't like the defensive stats and moveset for an in-game playthrough generally.

- Hoenn: Blaziken, Marshtomp, Sceptile
Blaziken, with or without Speed Boost, is the best of the three for me. Pretty even between Marshtomp and Sceptile, they're both good in their own ways.

- Sinnoh: Torterra, Infernape, Empoleon
Torterra is my favorite due to the cool design with the tree growing on its back, and I like the Grass/Ground typing. They're the trio I like most evenly, they're all close. I love Empoleon since penguins are my favorite animal; Infernape only edged it out because Infernape's faster and has Iron Fist as its Hidden Ability.

- Unova: Serperior, Emboar, Samurott
Serperior is far and away my favorite of the three, I love the Snivy line a lot. I like Emboar's design even despite the redundant Fire/Fighting typing. Samurott is cool but I prefer its pre-evolutions.

- Kalos: Greninja, Chesnaught, Delphox
Protean Greninja is too good not to be first here. Chesnaught edges out Delphox because I love knight aesthetics, but Delphox is cool too. Strong trio of starters.

- Alola: Decidueye, Primarina, Incineroar
Rowlet is my favorite first form starter ever and Decidueye being a Grass/Ghost archer owl is awesome. Primarina has a pleasant design and concept. As for Incineroar, I like it since I have been an on again off again viewer of professional wrestling throughout my life and I like the heel wrestler concept, but honestly, I prefer Litten and Torracat over Incineroar. I even have a team planned where I'll leave Torracat as an unevolved middle stage.

- Galar: Rillaboom, Inteleon, Cinderace
I'm not crazy about its preevvolutions, but Rillaboom is awesome. Cinderace and Inteleon can switch places with each other depending on the day, they're both good.

- Hisui: H-Decidueye, H-Typhlosion, H-Samurott
It took a little bit to warm up to, but I grew to really love Hisuian Decidueye's design and I appreciate that its coloration is autumnal. Hisuian Typhlosion has got a bit of a goofy face but I love the Fire/Ghost typing and the purple flames. Hisuian Samurott, while thematically appropriate, feels uninspired and boring.

- Paldea: Meowscarada, Skeledirge, Quaquaval
Meowscarada and Skeledirge are pretty even for me. While I'm among the people who wish the line would've stayed quadripedal to some extent, I like what we got with both Floragato and Meowscarada in the end. I love Skeledirge's design and concept, it's Fire/Ghost typing, and I think the middle stage Crocalor is cool too with its calavera face, fire/marigold flower/egg sombrero and its little vest pattern. Quaquaval is third by process of elimination but I really like the design. Very strong trio of starters in my opinion.

I have mostly chosen the Water-type for my playthroughs so I hold them more dear than other two starters. I used to chose Water because it saved me time from catching another Water-type for the Water Hms. I still usually Water now because its a really good defensive typing.

Favourite Starters by region and preference

Kanto: Blastoise > Venusaur = Charizard

The classic trio. However, unlike many I chose Squirtle over Charmander and Bulbasaur. You can't really go wrong with any of them though.

Johto: Feraligatr > Typhlosion > Meganium

Feraligatr is my favourite of the three...he's an alligator after all. I chose Cyndaquil for the first time, but when I saw the rival's Feraligatr I was envious. For the remakes I properly chose Feraligatr.

Hoenn: Swampert > Blaziken > Sceptile

Another good set of starters but Swampert edges out both Blaziken and Sceptile. Sceptile's pure Grass typing has always frustrated me so that's why its in last. I chose Mudkip in these games and it was very useful since Grass types are very bad in the RSE games (sorry Breloom!)

Sinnoh: Empoleon = Infernape > Torterra

I chose Piplup as my starter but Infernape has one of the best designs for Fire starters. Out of all the starter sets, this set is the highest in terms of quality of design. Empoleon's Water/Steel type attracted me (still the only one) and I love penguins so that was another reason to love it.

Unova: Serperior > Samurott > Emboar

The first gen that Grass won my heart for having the first snek (remember Smugleaf?) Also, the worst one competitive wise without its HA. Emboar infuriated me for being a terrible Fire/Fighting. The type combo never bothered me but the fact that Blaziken and Infernape outclassed it gave me a reason to ignore the Tepig line.

Kalos: Greninja > Chesnaught > Delphox

Greninja hands down wins this one. Its a ninja frog. It goes without saying right? I don't like AshGreninja for the blatant anime pandering but Greninja earned its place in my top 5 for a reason. Its HA was also very interesting when it was released. I don't hate Chesnaught and Delphox but Greninja just outclasses them.

Alola: Decidueye > Primarina = Incineroar

Not going too much into this one because other than Decidueye, I don't care for the other two. The other two have grown on me though and using Incineroar taught me to appreciate it more. Decidueye's Grass/Ghost typing intrigued me and its design is still my favourite of the 3.

Galar: Inteleon > Rillaboom = Cinderace

The worst set in the series, in my opinion. Inteleon wins simply for its unique design but it was at this point I was getting tired of humanoid starters. I chose Scorbunny though because I heard it was easy to get through the game fast with it. Thats all.

Hisui: H-Typhlosion = H-Samurott > H-Decidueye

I disliked H-Decidueye when leaks were revealed, which saddened me. I chose H-Typhlosion because of its Ghost typing and chill personality. H-Samurott is a better designed Samurott and more useful than it in my opinion.

Paldea: Quaquaval = Skeledirge > Meowscarada

Meowscarada is...interesting. As soon as I saw it I knew the internet would have fun with it. I chose Quaxly because it was the first Water/Fighting starter. Skeledirge is cool though and I was so happy that Fuecoco decided to not be humanoid.

Fire is definitely my favorite considering it's one of my three favorite types (the others being Fighting and Dragon).

....and I'm the only one who's voted for Fire so far. :lemon:

I have chosen water about 95% of the time. The only exceptions are Chimchar and Bulbasaur.

Its a tie between water and fire ^^ I usually pick fire because I often have lots of grass, and poison Pokemon on my team.

But I really like the water starters too, like I had Mudkip in AS, and Sobble in Sword, but in Y I had Fenicin, and Arceus Ive got Cyndaquil. In Scarlet I want Donald Duck as my starter lol

Kinda depends on who catches my attention.

I almost always pick the grass type. No strategy behind this, I just like the grass guys

Idk, but most of my first playthroughs have been fire.

as a kid i loved fire type the most, and i set up a weird rule for myself where i always had to pick the fire type starter every time a new pokemon game released. that rule did not last long, i think i only committed to it from DPPt to XY... now i would say i like the grass type best, but in terms of the starters themselves, i have an equal preference for the grass and water ones. the best starters in my opinion are probably popplio, serperior, chikorita, and cyndaquil!

I want to choose Grass but I have chosen Water 5 times, significantly more than Grass's 2.5 (I am split even on gen 2 starters) 😭

My usual pick tends to be fire, though gen 4 is usually grass and gen 3 is water.

i don't really play pokemon games anymore
but i've got an attachment to meganium from when i used to play a pokemon game on roblox

I'd have to say grass because Chespin is my favourite starter and one of my favourite pokemon ever, but it really does depend on the generation.

KANTO: Squirtle > Bulbasaur > Charmander

JOHTO: Cyndaquil > Totodile and Chikorita (I love them all)

HOENN: They're all on equal pegging for me, again I love them all. Would probably put Treeko first if I HAD to though.

SINNOH: Piplup > Chimcar > Turtwig. Again pretty equal.

UNOVA: Oshawott > Snivy > Tepig

KALOS: CHESPIN > Froakie > Fennekin

ALOLA: Rowlet > Litten > Popplio

At this point they all go downhill for me and I don't like most of them (The final evos atleast)

GALAR: Grookey > Sobble > Scorbunny (Absolutley hate Cinderace with a passion)

PALDEA: Fuecoco > Sprigitito > Quaxley. The first generation I put my starter in my box though, don't particularly like any of them..

I voted for water as it’s generally a type I find handy overall in the games and 5 of the starters I use are water - Swampert, Piplup, Oshawott, Froakie and Popplio.

Though I do really love some of the other type starters - particularly Bulbasaur and Cyndaquil who are my picks in their respective games!

This is hard to say because depending on the game I have gone with each of the 3 types at one point or another... I pick fire the least for sure but I choose grass and water pretty much equally I would say.

This is a tough one! I don't really lean towards any one type when it comes to my favorite starters; I just choose based off which design/final evolution design I like the best, and so far that's been split pretty evenly across all three. I think Fire's come up a little short thus far, but Grass and Water are pretty much even, and Fire could still easily catch up soon enough.
For what it's worth, my favorite of these three types generally speaking would be Grass. 🍃

For me, Grass types all the way! I think it might have something to do with how me and my mom did a lot of gardening when I was a kid. I think the only times I've ever not chosen the Grass starter was in Yellow (where you pretty much have to take the Pikachu at the start of the game) and Legends: Arceus (where I went with Cyndaquil, mostly because I was looking to mix things up a bit)
