Entry Fees for Sahara/ Villager DIYs/ high turnip prices etc.

low priced entry fees are okay I guess? I think it's understandable to want to be paid for your time :0 it does take a while to get through those loading screens after all. but entry fees at exorbitant amounts shouldn't be a thing, I agree, especially for villager DIYs and shopping around. I know it sucks but just don't visit those islands ;;

last night, I let people in to get a villager DIY for free, because I thought it'd be nice to give back to the community :") and a few people tipped, which was very kind of them! one person even let me keep their tip despite not getting the DIY as the villager stopped crafting once they arrived :'0 even after I asked them to take it back, they insisted I keep it

so there's definitely some very generous people in the ac community! but it does seem that this capitalist mentality is spreading around and affecting the game for everyone :/ I can only hope that people will start to play just to have fun, not for profit ;;

and maybe unrelated but I'll say it anyway: the business mentality is kinda why I stopped running my shop;; it was a bit off-putting having people offer really large amounts of bells/NMT for items that actually aren't worth much in-game? I might just end up giving them away at this point lol that seems more fun tbh

I would say that I understand it if they are opening up their town to give away something popular, like say, the cutting board DIY recipe. While I don't charge people to enter my town, I remember when I went to get the cutting board DIY recipe, and I remember seeing other people offering cutting board recipes, and looking at their threads, I always just think of how much time their spending managing the people in their town, their PMs, and their thread. I know it took me like a million years just to get in and not to mention how long it took while waiting for people to get their recipe while also seeing people leave and come in for more than just a couple of minutes. The person who opened up their town had to deal with this for over an hour, and they were obviously opening their gates b/c they knew that people really wanted that recipe (they didn't change anything). They even walked me from the airport to the crafter's home, and I got on the island an hour after the post was made, which means they did this for every other person who came before and after me.

I know some people are saying if you don't have time or something like that, don't open up your gates, but speaking for myself, I open my gates b/c I participate in the community when I want to get items, and I want to return the favor when I have something popular to offer. I open my gates for the community, and some of these people are also probably doing it for the same reason, but what to reduce the possibility of theft and want some sort of compensation from their time.

Sure you can fence your town and pick up your dropped items when people are coming in, but you are also going out of your way to preparing your town for people coming in, and that also takes time.

I do however see people charging ridiculous amounts for things that aren't even sought after, so they're obviously just looking for a quick buck.

Entry fees for using someone else's Nook and Able Sisters, talking to a villager giving out a DIY, and NPC visitors is just strange to me. I've never seen anything like that in both the CF and NL online communities. I agree with Mairen, if you feel like letting people in your island and space is a chore than you shouldn't feel forced to open your port to others. Animal Crossing has always been about helping one another, just because we wanted to. If hosting for others is no fun, don't do it. Whenever I see someone in need of Lilies, I always offer them to come by and shop at my Nook's Cranny, expecting nothing in return, just because I like helping others and it cost me nothing. Thanks to NH new online features, I don't even have to monitor visitors as I don't have to worry about them uprooting flowers or cutting trees. (I don't care if they take fruit or pluck flowers, they'll grow back.)

On the topic of turnips though, I rather ask for optional tips than put a required entry fee. Everyone has a different amount of turnips they're selling, so you can't expect everyone to be able to pay the same fee. This week I've only been able to buy 500 turnips from Daisy Mae (I woke up at 11:50am and only 50k in my pockets :'^]), so paying 100k+ on an entry fee would make a huge dent in any profit I make. I always tip 10-15% of whatever I've sold, which will be different each week.

If you don't have time to open up your gates for people to come over.... then don't? Or stop it after a certain time
People aren't doing this out of the kindness of their heart. they are doing it because they know they can make bank off of it. The back and forth of multiple trips for turnips ok, yeah hence why i think a culture of a tip is important. But paying 1 NMT for me to come in for 2 minutes is dumb imo. I said this seems unsavory and agree that it takes away from the spirit of this game. I never said I think its ruining the community, but I do think it would better the community to not have a bunch of stuff like that

Honestly, I'm perfectly fine if people are only opening up to make a profit because I still have access to whatever they're offering. If you are looking to make a transaction, it's only fair that the other person gets to make a transaction out of it too.

If people only opened for free, I guarantee that the number of people offering services will decrease. With the current system, at least there are many different offers people can choose from so they can choose what they are most comfortable with. If anything, it adds to the community because it offers a variety of playstyles for people to choose from rather than one notion of what is 'right'. Sell your items, offer them for free - Animal Crossing allows you to manage the way you play in the way that you want! I love that our community is big enough that we have so much choice about where and how we trade.

There is a certain amount of risk that you assume when you allow people into your town, not to mention the time sink that it is. A 2 minute trip for you could be a few hours of opening gates, managing the queue, and sending codes for the host. If you don't want to pay 1 NMT or any fee for a quick visit to Celeste or whatnot, that's absolutely your choice, but it's also the choice of the host to set whatever parameters they are comfortable with. Unfortunately, there are a few unsavoury players who may pluck flowers, talk to villagers, buy Nook Cranny's limited items, or other things that you do not consent with, and setting a fee helps to cushion this risk should something happen to you.

If any of you guys want to add me as a friend, PM me so I can add you in-game and message you on TBT next time I have special visitors in my town. I had Celeste and Kicks yesterday and wanted to have some friends over, but didn't want to post on The Airport and potentially get 50 people asking to come, since I would've had to tell most of them no.

I want a few friends who I can play with where we can go visit each other's islands without worrying about entry fees!

But yes, I totally agree. 1 NMT (worth 250k) for one DIY from a crafting villager or just to enter and go shopping at Kicks seems nuts! I saw a crafting store yesterday where you had supply all the materials AND pay 2 NMT per item. My eyes about bugged out of my head!

It's so much more fun playing for fun than for profit, for me. The whole transactional relationships things feels off-putting.

I open my island for free all the time to let people shop or sell turnips when my price is high. I also give things away that people are looking for and never ask for anything in return. Sometimes people give me something anyway, but a lot of the time they don't and that's okay. I give to others because that's the kind of person I am and want to be. I'm the same way in real life.

A lot of people are always looking for the Simple Wood Fence DIY and can't find it, but it's showed up in my Nook Stop several times. Every time it shows up, I buy 2 or 3 copies and just give them away to people who are looking for them. A few days ago, a girl on Facebook was looking for a KK song and was desperate to find it but no one had it. Yesterday, it showed up in my Nook Stop, so I bought a copy and spent an hour this morning tracking down her Facebook post to offer it to her. She was completely shocked when I wouldn't take anything for it. I just gave it to her. That's me and I refuse to let the current AC culture change me.

I've missed out on a lot of things I would like to have when people refused to trade with me because I couldn't or wouldn't provide what they were asking for. It is what it is. I'll either find them eventually, find someone who will trade fairly with me, or just do without.

yup. I do it for free. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if you want to sell turnips or are looking for a certain item or something hit me up. it sucks to not have what you want to enjoy the game.
