I absolutely lost it when I saw that Dom is called Chachamaru in the Japanese and Chinese version of the game. He's also called Dominik in German which is just a bit too 'human' for me xD His phrase is also so much cuter in Japanese. Sniff-sniff? Ah!! What other names and phrases do you prefer in non-english versions?

Aww, that is cute! I'll have to look them up now. I can't wait to see them!

The only one I know is how German, Raymond is Gunnar, I like that one.

Edit: looked them up, like how Butch is Bruno and Cherry is Luna! There's also how Octavian is Octavio.

Rex's (the lazy lion) is named Sundae/Sunday (there's no difference in how these are written phonetically in Japanese; "Sandee" would be the exact transcription). I think that name is just so much cuter, and fits his lazy boy personality better. He also says "daon" instead of cool cat. "daon doesn't exactly have a meaning, it's just kind of a sentence ending that adds flavor, and i think meant to sound like lion, but it is much better than "cool cat". I find I like him much better in Japanese than in English (I am a native English speaker but play primarily in Japanese in which I am reasonably fluent, for context).

I agree that Chachamaru is a great name!

I also like Fauna and Flurry's names in Japanese more. Fauna is Doremi (Do-Re-Me, get it?) and Flurry's is "Yukimi" (a girl's name meaning snow). I just think they are prettier names.

Lastly, though I don't have either of them, in Japanese it is the smug anteater who wears the mariachi clothing who is named Antonio, and this just makes so much more sense than "olaf" I don't understand this change, to the point where i wonder if it was a mistake in some point of the translation that they just stuck with.

I could go on and on, and might later...

Freckles name in German is Quacks, Velma's German name is Wilma, Cherry's name is Bella, Raymond's name in German is Gunnar, Agne's German name is Nora, Croque's German name is Carlo, Monty's German name is Daniel, Ankha's German name is Kleo (which is short for Cleopatra)

if i remember correctly, diana’s japanese name is natalie and i’ve always liked that for her - diana is a gorgeous name but i think natalie would suit her well, too :3

Woah! Luna for Cherry seems wild! <3 It's cute though.

Those are such pretty names! TvT Wah!!

I play in Japanese so I generally prefer the Japanese names. I don't even know how they got Dom for Chachamaru...

Raymond's Japanese name is Jack, which I like much better too.

Another of my favorites is Tangy. Her name is Hyakupa-, which is a shortened version of "100 percent" (like 100% orange juice lol)

Same! Though one exception for me may be Freya. Her Japanese name, Tundra, is not quite as interesting to me, and I think Freya is very pretty and suits the snooty personality. I like how the kuchi-guse in English is uff-da, which is apparently Norwegian.

I briefly changed my language to Spanish... but it wasn't the best for trading since I'm so used to the name of the items being in English, so I already changed it back BUT Diana's name in Spanish is Bambina and I'm here for it, that's what I've been calling her ever since! She also said "¡Gracias, cielo!" which is much more endearing to me! Also, Avery's name in Spanish is WAY less generic, it's Cuzco <3

Edit: Isabelle's name in Spanish is Canela, which means Cinnamon in English, and it's a very common name for dogs lol

The fact that my baby is named Chachamaru makes my heart so happy and I love him even moree for it.

That being said I love the English names for all my sheepies. Baabara, is ADORABLE. Curlos? TIMBRA?? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!! :love:

This just makes me think of how in japanese Lobo is named Bunjiro
and Wolfgang's japanese name is Robo???

Like why not switch the two 😂

But I do enjoy Raymond's english name compared to his japanese name being Jack. Because you know everybody loves raymond!

DUDE!!! I decided to research what Raymond's name was in Spanish and it's "Narciso" as in the hunter Narcissus known for his beauty and Sherb's name is "Morfeo" as in the Greek god Morpheus, god associated with sleep and dreams!! LMAO

Edit: I incorrectly made a statement about Narcissus, it has been corrected lol

I believe Cousteau's Japanese name translates to "spring roll", which suits his house and style much better. Naming him after Jacques Cousteau for the English language versions seems a little obscure... I would've went with Hercule, or even Poirot, given his mustache, myself lol

Edit: I played NL in Spanish for a bit in secondary school and I thought that having "Socrates" for Blathers and "Estella" for Celeste was adorable.

I like Zucker’s Japanese name Takoya better. Because he is a Takoyaki. 😂

Also Chachamaru is adorable but it just... reminds me of this anime I don’t like called Negima...

Some of the villagers' Japanese names are... hilarious, or at the least quite random lol

Some of my favs:
Annalise = S'il vous plait
Axel = XL
Buck = Vayasikov
Camofrog = Full Metal
Cleo = Isotope
Curly = Ham Cuts
Drake = Foie Gras
Kody = Idaho
Shep = Bob (lol)

Here's a full list if anyone wants to take a look: https://nookipedia.com/wiki/List_of_villagers
