To me, both them and Mabel are weird; It'd be nice if they kept a bit of distance instead of wanting to stop right behind my back, but no, both of the shops have someone that wants to always be as close to me as possible. (Only exception being the raised area of the upgraded Nook's Cranny. I don't know why Timmy and Tommy avoid going up there.
(I...guess it's fine for Mabel, since she's always done this, and it can be fun running around the displays in hopes of making her constantly turn around to find the best path to my character. It was just like that in Wild World, too!)

The game seems really biased towards him. During the prologue, he handles all sales while Tommy just aimlessly walks around outside, and in Nook's Cranny, he's always the one closest to you at the entrance. I go out of my way to talk to Tommy because I think he deserves more attention.

In Japan, it's common for sales associates to follow you around and try to be helpful. I'm positive that's the reason for why. Doesn't translate very well into western culture though haha
I'd punch them if anyone followed me that closely.

Ok this will sound bad but... I feel bad when Timmy & Tommy follow me around.
DON'T GET ME WRONG it's very cute, but I've always felt like they were being... forced? But anyway, I think it's cute and the customer service is always spot on. 11/10

In real life they'd give me the screaming heebiejeebies oh my godddd. I hate being followed around and watched while I'm shopping arghhhh!! The two of them are just so dang cute I can't bring myself to be too annoyed with them though, they just seem so excited all the time 
To be fair though, my favorite animal in the world is the noble raccoon
so I have a pretty massive amount of fondness for the entire Nook family, even when Tom is shakin' me down for every last bell I've got, haha!

I've long referred to the pair as the NBs, which stands for Nookling Ba****ds. I generally get what I need and get out.
I hate it in real life, but I don't mind in AC. Mostly because I find it incredibly uncomfortable if people get physically close to me, but I think it's also the difference between adult humans and adorable tanuki kids. Cute animals could follow me around in real life stores all day

But honestly, I see it as them getting excited to get a visitor. like, Sabel once said that my visits are the most exciting part of the day. so, I take it that's why mabel and the nooklings follow you. they're really excited to see you ^_^
