do you judge people by their grammar?

Aww...your teacher should definitely be doing his job more thoroughly. It's a tough, underpaid job for sure, but the whole point is to explain problems. And I've never heard of ripping a student's paper--I hope that's a figure of speech?! (Not that I haven't been tempted a time or two, when it's clear a student has been drunk-typing. Heh.)

I'm oversensitive myself, mostly because of my job. I also see a lot of examples through my husband's work in the corporate world--HR really will just toss resumes if they are badly written, y'all. But I really don't go around pointing at people's grammar if they aren't directly under my care--if I did, I would never get off Facebook!

I absolutely agree that there are many reasons people may struggle with language, and I appreciate what you are saying about acceptance. However, I see a lot of people argue--not just here, but many other venues as well--that grammar shouldn't matter, that the teachers who try to convey the power of correct language are boring or stupid, and that caring about such knowledge indicates numerous character flaws (uncool, not chill, uptight, etc.). To me, that's the flip side of the same rude coin. I teach writing to young adults who are heading towards applications to professional schools, resumes, cover letters, and executive summaries. I love language and I want it to contribute to their success. So I just want to offer that perspective on behalf of the language teachers of the world. :)
It always makes me smile to see an educator who is so passionate about their job. I love language too; it's a beautiful thing, and I like seeing it respected. Effort put into grammar is effort put into improving our communication with each other, which helps to bring a little bit more openness and understanding into the world.

One of the reasons why I don't judge people so harshly (unless your just blatantly lazy in your typing and literally not even trying at all in making any contributing post; why join a forum?) is because I have horrid spelling and grammar sometimes. Heck sometimes I've written grammar with an "e" if I was in a rush and like just a few minutes ago I wrote "house" . . . "has". Sometimes I just get so preoccupied and mess up in typing, haha. And the above sentence probably doesn't make much sense either.

However, I do know some people can be critical on that matter so I often re-read and edit every post I make, haha.

One thing I bet we can all agree on--what the heck is up with the people who designed AutoCorrect? You should see some of the errors it puts in my phone, especially when I'm trying voice dictation. None of them are funny enough to make the FYAC website, but still... I tried to put in 'cathartic' and it gave me 'Mark farted.' :o (Luckily, I didn't hit send.) My two little boys laughed so hard over that one that I thought, "Hmmm, perhaps the coders are also 12!" Ha!

That brings up a good lesson about spell-check too. I had a student intend to write 'circumscribe' and spell-check put 'circumcise' in his essay. Not the same thing! ;) The old 'public-to-pubic' switch is another common spell-check gift.

P.S. Hana-Nezumi, thanks for your kind words!

In terms of grammar, I don't really mind as long as it's passable. That being said, I'd normally expect people to put a bit more effort into their grammar when posting on forums and the like. I don't mind poor grammar at all in IMs though.

I lik dnt no wat thee bigz deals if I dnt use goud spelleifgs and girmar!!!!!!!$&@$
I dnt judge plp ;)

No. I judge them by if their being ignorant and saying something horrible about someone and such.
You can literally be the WORST with grammer and I will not judge you AT ALL. When i first started playing an online game my grammer was literally HORRIBLE. And it still is but i'm improving a lot.

I Only Type Like This When Putting A Title On Anything
I type like this normally though.
But I find it annoying when:
hi guys! how are you!
At least put some sort of capital at the beginning, it bothers me more than Doing This.

You guys must hate me because I am a grammar Nazi. I'm an English major and grammar and spelling are like the two most important parts of my passing my degree. If I make two or three mistakes on a paper, I am doomed. If I use the wrong word I lose points. This makes you a grammar Nazi really quick.

Also, I have alway felt that you express your intelligence with your words, and convey yourself as well educated with your grammar and spelling. I have no desire to look poor, uneducated nor unintelligent. Chat speak grates on me like the fires of hell.
