The thing is, when I was at the beginning of the game, it felt like the island was too big, because I didn't have so many ideas yet in terms of designing it. However, once you unlock the terraforming feature and getting into the whole landscaping process, the whole island suddenly felt too small. The biggest trouble I (still) have is creating good looking areas for my villagers, like I want to give each villager a nice garden with furniture, flowers and all, but I'm never sure what the right size is. Simply because the longer I work on it, the less space I have available at the end and it gets so frustrating that I start over because of the space issue. Sometimes, I look up other people's gorgeous designed islands which looking somehow twice as big as mine and I'm sitting there in front of my Switch wondering how the heck they managed to do that. Guess I just suck at designing...
The island is a good size but I do have ideas that I would like to implement but can't. I wouldn't mind the island being a bit bigger or having the option to have a (smaller) sister island. They could make it harder to obtain (like 200k + nookmiles) or have the option that we add a sister island for every player (and that player would be the representative, be able to place bridges etc). It might also make it easier for families that share one island.
After I reworked and rearranged my island to a layout I'm happy with, I honestly find its a little big. Even with multiple flower gardens, a yard for everyone, an orchard, a little forest, and some smaller attractions like an outdoor bath area, I still have like 4 big empty spaces. I feel like the game could really use like, 2 or 3 more villager slots and maybe 1 more shop.
The first time it seemed to small. Some areas I was just making to big. But I had to send my switch out for repair and I figured I would have to restart. Which I did. So I had two months to think of what I wanted to do.
Now, I am making areas smaller. I am working on an area at a time in stead of all over the place. And I am making it look a little more natural but not trying to make everything so structured and even now.

I wish we had more room though, to have more then 10 villagers.
For me it feels a little too small as I wanted my villagers to have big personalized yards, but in doing so I had to sacrifice a lot of space that I could have used for outdoor restaurants, cafes, parks, etc. My island is mostly urban themed but I wanted to have a mini forest area and as I was sectioning off parts of my island for my villager yards, i realized that it would be impossible and I would just have to do without. >_<
I flip-flop on this depending on whether I'm currently in an island-designing mood or not. If I am, I tend to get lots of ideas and think, oh no, what if I run out of space for them all? And at other times I see the vast expanses of extra space and think... that's just an eyesore.
just the right size. but sometimes i think it's small when i want to have more area for hybrids. though i think it's just the rain, it needs to stop acting up.
i wish the land on my beach was bigger though! i've seen islands where they're able to put their campsite there, so lucky....
I feel that most of the time the island is too small. I feel like the more cliffs someone has the less room they have for other things. I did have my island at one point with no cliffs at all and felt like I had soo much more space. I later changed it because having some cliffs is nice to navigate imo.
I guess it just kinda depends on your style if there is too much or not enough space.
I do wish we could have more villager houses even if just optional. I mean the amount we have may be ok for people who like to spread out their buildings across the island, but for me, I like to cluster buildings. If I had more villager houses, not only do I get to meet more awesome critters, but it will feel more like a town than a village.
Both, oddly enough. Sometimes it feels like there won't be enough room for all the things I'd like to do, sometimes I'm surprised by the amount of space available. This will probably change if I end up messing with the terrain, though I'm content with the default terrain I got.
Too big and too small all at the exact same time. I run out of room on a lot of stuff and have to backtrack on a lot of stuff I work on. It can be quite frustrating.
When I first started it felt massive, now that it's finished, it seems pretty small. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if they had an island expansion expansion
