I've always wondered how car registration plates worked in other countries. If it's random or has some order? I'll explain the Irish one.

Here is an example of one: 07-C-1234

The 07 means it was made in 2007.
The C stands for Cork, which is a county in Ireland. (There is 34 variations depending on what county)
The 1234 stands for the 1234th car made in Cork in 2007.
It's pretty simple. How does it work in your country?

Here's in Quebec, it's pretty simple.

3 letters 3 numbers or reverse
And now we have 1 letter + 2 numbers + 3 letters.

English example:

AB12 ABC

AB - area code for where the car was registered
12 - last two numbers of the year it was registered if it was registered in march or afterwards, or 50 + last two numbers of the year if registered after september
ABC - random letters

In the US, the common format is "ABC-123".

But some of the newer ones are "ABC1234".

Of course, it can vary from state to state.

I forgot to mension that in 2013, some of the registration plates would be like 13-C-1234. So they decided to do 131 instead for the first half of the year and 132 for the second half of the year. They decided to do this year aswell to spread out the sales so it is 141 and 142.

In California, because there's a lot of cars, it's ABC5555. In China, it's 6 characters in total with a small character stamp at the corner of the plate that's suppose to indicate what city/province the car is from.

Here you go!

australia has 3 random letters than 3 random numbers

then they ran out of combinations so they had to change and then they made then like 2 letters, 2 numbers, 2 letters.

But you can get personalized ones to say whatever you want (within reason), as long as it's 6 characters long

My parents have both got personalised plates, my Dad's Skoda Yeti has T3 YET and my Dad got my Mum's her's as a present years ago and she's had it registered on all of her cars since, right now it's on her Skoda Roomster and its H2O RAH (Combining her love of water with her surname)

Whereas our joint owned Seat Mii (hehe I partially own it!) just has the standard UK number plate :(

You can get custom ones here too. For example, a teacher I know called Miss Hsu (she's chinese) has MI5 HSU on hers xD
