The amiibo cards not working is something I'm worried about, hope it works the same way or similar to the DS, as I don't have the amiibo reader, I just put my card on the ds screen. So fingers crossed the cards will still work for NH!
I could be wrong, but I believe all official switch controllers (joycons and the pro controller) can read amiibos. So you wouldnt need an external amiibo reader.
Amiibo just hadn't been invented when the 3ds first came out, it was added later. So older 3ds models didnt have the hardware to read them, so they sold an external reader and did a model update.
