First thing that comes to my mind are the Dark Matter and Zero bosses from Kirby. They took you from this happy land to this eerie, dark boss. They were great, though.

Another series that comes to mind is Sonic the Hedgehog. Especially Unleashed and 2006, making Iblis (Arabic for "the Devil") the main boss. Completely random and didn't really fit the game at all.

Anymore you can think of?

they fit the kirby game because it was about a mirror, hence the mirror side of the happy fun candy coated dream land.

mega man juno from MML 1/MM64

all game you're off trying to find the mother lode, fighting the bonnes, when WHOOPS ALL OF A SUDDEN HERE'S A NEW CHARACTER THAT'S THE FINAL BOSS NO BIG DEAL GUYS

Solidus in MGS2. Guns the entire game, then suddenly at the end HERE HAVE A SWORD THAT IS VITAL TO BEATING THE FINAL BOSS BECAUSE YOU CAN'T USE ANY GUNS. OH BY THE WAY YOU CANT USE IT FOR ANY OTHER PART OF THE GAME.

Lol, I remember that. Really strange experience when I played through it the first time.

I'm doing it on hard mode at the moment. I've done it on Extreme, and European Extreme... but for some reason on hard mode it screws me over. In Sons of Liberty the Body armor is glitched and makes you deal half damage while taking half damage, but I don't have Substance anymore. Can't wait for the bloody HD collection.
