I really like the Best Friend feature in AC:NL. It is a great way to message other players, while in game, but not in their towns. Wanna be able to let you friends know when your gate is open? This is how to do it. Wanna ask a friend to open their gate? Here's a way. Wanna just say hello, or I caught the big one? This is your answer. To help you get started, here is a short tutorial of what I know. If there are errors, I apologize. If you have something to add, let me know.
Best Friend-ing is a system which allows you to have conversations with other players while you are online, but not in each other's towns.
In order to use this feature you must do all of the following:
each have “Best Friend-ed” the other person,
both have your Best Friend messaging system turned on,
be online.
To Set up
To “Best Friend” someone:
have them visit your town, or visit their town.
tap the green friend icon on the lower left of your map screen
tap the heart which appears beside their name
your visiting friend must also tap the heart beside your name
To turn on your Best Friend messaging system:
tap the yellow tab with heart in it (top right corner of the map screen)
tap “on” and follow the prompts
Note: sometimes when you are moving between wi-fi spots this feature will automatically turn off. Remember to check it in this case.
To Use
To send messages while not in each other's towns:
when friends are online a red indicator (and sound) will show on the yellow tab with the heart on it, in the top right corner of your screen
you will also get an automatic message saying “friend's name””I am online!”. (You do not need to reply to this, if you don't want to. It is just a notification.)
tap the yellow tab
tap on the name of the person you want to talk to
type your message (just like the in-town conversation system)
Maximum Best Friends?
I currently have 8 people on my Best Friends list, so the rumoured limit of 4 is not true. I have yet to find the upper limit.
