Yep,I rarely farm stuff and mostly get passed down bells

Take your time and patience with beetle hunting and use the money from that to invest in turnips. The first time I ever invested I was terrified because I invested all I had in my bank at the time (a little under 1M in bells). I was able to sell them in my friend's town at 500 something after purchasing turnips at like 90 bells.
