Anyone else a bit scared to play online?

Totally understand where you're coming from, OP! NH is my first AC game, and the online factor is definitely a bit intimidating. As such, I've taken it very slow and simple with any trading, and I've barely hosted at all. Thankfully I've only had positive experiences so far, but I only use Bell Tree and the 25+ Tortimer's discord for trading, both of which seem to be very warm and un-predatory communities.

My advice would be to not jump at the first chance to pursue something you might be after, but wait for posts from people who seem like they're doing it for fun and magnanimity instead of making a quick buck. Good luck!

I would not even do that...
I would send like 1%-10% (Depending on the amount and if I wouldn't be bothered about losing it) first and then pay the remaining balance as soon as I have received the items.

But then again, I have good feedback and I used to be Site Manager of an Animal Crossing auction site (and can prove it when I am on my computer as I am typing this message on my phone) and so I guess that I have the reputation behind me
A lot of the time they'll ask you to. If it does make you uncomfortable, you can always ask to pay half or whatever, and they'll generally be willing to negotiate. There's a solid feedback system here as well as a good moderating staff, so most are trustworthy. For me it's more of a gesture of kindness/good faith to pay up front. If someone has negative ratings and I'm concerned they might scam me, I won't trade with them at all, period. I haven't had a single issue with this since I've been here.

I don't know if the staff would even be able to get the spent TBT Bells back in a scam situation though.

definitely! i have social anxiety and even just quick trades made me shake, but it's gotten a lot better especially after i joined TBT. i still get anxious, but i've only ever dealt with kind people on here and it also helps to remind myself no one is focusing on every little detail about what i'm doing or what my island looks like, etc. you're your own worst critic!

I never thought I would be able to go online. I really wanted the different color monsters so I ended up trying it. I have really bad anxiety and my hands shake so it is not easy for me. I can feel my blood pressure go up evertime I have to visit someone or they come to get something from me. I feel like Im going to screw up something everytime. My desire to get some of the items though has been stronger than my fear which I guess is a good thing. I cant tell you how intimidating it is when I am trying to type out hi and they already said a couple of sentences...lol. Oh well it was worth it , I got my monsters which I love and continued to sell and trade for things I really wanted.
Yep, it's my desire for a blue and white lighthouse that is making me even consider it to be honest!

OP, if you want to test the waters I'd be happy to host/visit and get you your missing fruits. No chatting necessary!

That's so kind! I've actually managed to get the fruit, thankfully! I might have gone online sooner if I hadn't. I know one person in real life who plays (my husband) and he knows one person who came to his island and dropped off the last type I was missing.
I have these things in my shop today though if you're looking for any of them.

I was thinking of suggesting that anyone else who's never tried, and wants to, could get in touch - I might be inviting scammers by saying that though! 😂

Rating on here is a good indication of whether someone is a good visitor/host. If there's something that needs protection, you can always fence it off (whether it's items or the rest of your island), then your strange visitors can't get to it. Most people fence parts of their island off.

It’s a breeze and once you try it a few times you’ll wonder why you were anxious about it!

Most of the time people will be happy to host you on their islands (it can be reassuring when you’re new and have few ratings and they’re not sure if they can trust you), so if you don’t know what to do, you can just ask them to send you their dodo code when they’re ready.

Typically when you arrive they’ll have their item dropped. Do not run to pick it up. Instead walk over to an area beside where the item and the person is (still on screen and in sight obviously).

Now you can do the “Greetings” emote if you like, if you havent typed “hey” yet as you got out of the airport. Then drop your items.

Now you can move over to the item they dropped for you and pick it up, checking that it’s what you want.

Then, just do Joy, Glee, or Delight emote if you dont want to type “thanks!” They’ll emote or type back. Give them a couple seconds in case they’re typing.

Then they will either end the session, or, if that’s not happening, just run back to the airport and choose to go home.

Then back on the forums, click to add feedback to their profile and thank them for the trade.

Simple! You’re going to be fine!

I only ever go to my hubbies island or he come to mine. I’ve never opened up my island to strangers. I’m kind of shy with people I don’t know very well and I’m also scared of getting ripped off. ( not that anyone on this forum would do that but you never know) maybe one day I’ll get up the courage. I do need cherries...

Communication is pretty important.

It helps a lot if you have the Switch App or planning to type in-game however, I've seen that messaging in-game gives some people anxiety. I would really utilize the PM/DM system here so there's no discrepancies.

It helps too to get their ign (in game name) and island name for your precautionary needs.

If you still feel nervous, you can always fence in the area surrounding your airport so that the person can't run off.

Honestly, it's exciting and fun. I'm a social introvert, so I have nervous energy but that need for adventure. I've traded, visit islands for specific NPCs, wished on stars and let others explore my island. It's a great experience.

Yeah, the first couple of trades I was super nervous, since ACNH was my first AC game, but the people here are genuinely very kind so I've become a lot more relaxed with it :) Also I usually only trade stuff I'm fine with parting with, so just in case something goes wrong I won't miss it too much but nothing like that has happened to me on this site, I'm just super paranoid haha

After you get your first few done it becomes old hat.

I recommend starting to just visit islands through the Airport board. Typically they will have people have the island open to get a recipe from a villager, to shop, or to visit an NPC. Usually people will have the post well detailed with what you are allowed to do and not to do... its a good way to get your foot in the water to seeing what playing online with other people is all about.

After you are comfortable in those "controlled environments" of the Airport threads, trading items with other users wont be as intimidating. Tho, I recommend going on site trading and viewing their feedback before trading... just to be safe. TBT has a lot less scammers than other places due to our public feedback system and mods/admins removing "retaliation negative" feedback.

When I first started playing NL I never played online. I had a lot of issues playing any games with friends in general due to my anxiety so I often solo'd every game that I played. After a while I became friends with a lot of people in the Animal Crossing community on Tumblr. We chatted a lot on Skype and they kind of helped me come out if my shell and I started visiting their towns and had them coming to mine. I started feeling WAY more comfortable with playing with people and eventually branched out to trading with people and this led to me playing more multiplayer games as well! I would be lying if I said that I don't still get quite sick with anxiety but it's gotten a bunch easier once I pushed myself into things with a group I was comfortable with.

In some ways yes. One thing I like about this game is that strangers have very little power in your town unless they're on your best friends list. They cannot dig or chop down trees, they cannot uproot flowers, or pick up placed furniture and designs. They can still pluck flower buds though, and plant flowers although not trees, and they can pick up items you leave lying around rather than placed. I feel that my town is safer to a degree but still not fully protected. While someone may pick my flowers without asking, they will grow buds again in a few days. It still makes me mad when someone will take even temporary things without asking though. Based off of my own morals and also because I put a lot of time and effort into this game and I prefer my beautiful flowers and trees to be in full bloom and ripe with fruit. Most people are polite and will ask before doing anything or just won't do it at all. However, I have deep rooted trust issues that have been developed through real life experiences and online as well, and I also have anxiety that I am being treated for. I was raised by a paranoid parent and I am also paranoid because of my mental illness/weakness/whatever. I am very paranoid when letting others roam my island but I am trying to be more open and relaxed about it. I just try to remember to not leave valuables lying out in case someone asks to explore, because I hate to say no...

I'm cautious, but I wouldn't say I'm scared. With the bugs and glitches, and crime rate (if I may be allowed to use that term) of the general population, letting strangers into my town is something I do carefully. I haven't personally had a bad experience yet, but I don't do foolish things either: I always send session via the airport, I don't leave valuables just laying around on the ground if someone I don't know is coming to visit, I make sure people have a positive guest rating, etc. So far, so good!

I’m doing it just for very short visits such as a quick pick up but I am not doing anything like turnips or 8 player multiplayer lol

I was like this with New Leaf. I was scared to go to someone else's town or invite them to my own town, mainly because I heard so many rumors involving hacked items and how they can crash your save or ruin your town. I was hesitantant at first, but when I looked up items found in NL and I saw so many cool outfits worn in Tortimer's island, I'm like "I have to get these." And so began my search online for a place I could trust, which was hard. I don't exactly remember how I found this site, but I liked the rating system and tbt payment option. I had so many good experiences on here that I decided to give a few other places a try, though I did get a few scammers elsewhere.

One of the greatest things about New Horizons is using a dodo code to invite players, since they can't chop your trees or dig them and your flowers out and youcan put fences around areas you want to protect, so stealing is a lot harder.

BUT!! I still hate the auto-save feature, because if they pick up something you forgot to put away, or you do a pay-first entry and they don't let you go into their island as agreed on, then even if you cut the connection, they'll still have that item.

Why, why, why the frig is auto-save not optional?

i started trading online in new leaf, and it was very smooth for me! i can confidently say that everyone, at least on tbt, is pretty friendly! you should be fine as long as you're polite and follow basic etiquette (ie don't run through flowers or take stuff)

It's super intimidating at first, especially on here, but once you start going to other peoples islands/letting them on yours, it becomes so easy. It makes the game more fun IMO.

Just be aware of what people can do on a dodo code, and try your best to prevent those things. Flowers and fruit can grow back. Don't leave a ton of items and DIYs on the ground outside (though, most people on this website won't steal them). And, from what I have heard, apparently people can put up their own QR code design in your Able's shop, and villagers can wear that design (hasn't happened to me so I don't know how it works really)

Well I just had my first online visitor thanks to this thread! Totally painless 🙂 I even tried it the app which made it easier to chat a little and I got a recipe I was looking for!

I feel one step closer to the lighthouse of my dreams 😊 Thanks for all the advice. I hope this helps some other people who were nervous too.

This is great advice and I think I'll try this next!
