This is funny reading this like it's some lost ancient thing. I still see newspapers, fliers, and all sorts of papers. It hasn't stopped.
You are right of course, and I believe I mentioned that in my original post they are still around. I think though, the true impact was how important newspapers were, because that was actually how people got their news. There was news on TV, but even then only for a short time, like maybe 30-60 minutes in the evening. Nothing was 24 hours a day or instant like now.
Its odd to really think that you had to wake up the next day, pick up a rolled up paper off of your front doorstep and read what happened the previous day. And even then it was up to the editor to decide what was important enough to publish on a limited amount of paper. Imagine how much information was missed or received too late too publish until another 24 hours?
Plus being a newspaper delivery person was a respectable job for teenagers who got up before everyone else to make their daily deliveries before school. When it came time to renew the subscription, the delivery person would come to ask if we wanted to continue, and my parents would also tip because he did such a great job.
I wanted to do that job at one point for spending money, but my parents made the right call. I cant wake up early to save my life
