I don't know if this is the original source, but I was watching a video on YouTube by leven today and this caught my eye. In the museum the player walks behind a glass window with outlines of a bunch of villager NPCs. I counted them up and there is 18 of them. I also noticed that there are characters in those outlines that show up in the rest of the video. For example, Celia the eagle matches outline #1, Reneigh, the new horse matches outline # 9, and Bianca the tiger possibly matches outline #11.

What do you guys make of this?

i’m not too sure what to make of that but 18 sounds like a lot 0-0

there’s a lot of villagers i love, don’t me wrong, but i’d be perfectly content with 12 or so

10 villagers and up to 8 players I think.

Plus whatever visiting NPC!

I'd also be content with fewer, but if this is true then no matter what we prefer it would seem we get 18.

I think those outlines are just showing all the different animal species available

If this is true then they cut down the species types a lot. In previous games there were 35 different animal species. Here there are only 18.

It was confirmed that all 383 previous villagers in New Leaf were returning... so they did not cut any species..

11 looks more like a pig to me. Also that chart in the museum seems to show different evolutionary lines; if you look closely, you'll see the elephant is pointing to the mammoth skeleton.

As for this thread... there's definitely some over-thinking going on. This is just an aesthetic thing.

Like Holly said, it?s an evolutionary tree showing the evolution of each villager species. At the very end there is an empty spot on the tree where your player can stand (next to the monkey, of course ;) )

I also though 11 looked kind of like a pig, that's why I said "possibly". I can see a tiger too though so I don't know.

It may be overthinking, but I just thought it was interesting.
If this were the way it was, then I would assume that each island would likely have some species overlapping. For example, my current NL town has 2 cats and 2 squirrels. We don't see that happening here as all of the outlines are different.

That'd be amazing if they added that many. In Gamecube we could have 15 and a few more would make it perfect; 10 was super underwhelming for me.

Like John said, it's probably 10 animal villagers + 8 potential human villagers. I don't want to have to keep up with 18 different neighbors.

I'm with the idea that it's just a coincidence, at least for now. Likely just random museum outlines.

10 villagers + 8 players seems like what it's going to be. If there's an expansion pack with another island, we may get more.

Even 10 villagers is too overwhelming. If they're bumping it to 18, I sure do hope we'll be able to stop new move-ins as the direct hinted to.

i think it just shows a few of the different villager species as being descendants of the dinosaurs. i don't see how or why it would be connected to the amount of villagers living in the town.

It's definitely this. You can see this design throughout the fossil exhibit, if you look at all the different footage. Honestly, it's one of my favorite touches.
