Only 2 years of updates? Fine or not?

i love new horizons, but i’m honestly really disappointed that nintendo stopped updating it when they did. the base game and 2.0 provided some amazing features, items, etc, but to be honest, the fact that the base game and the updates we did get were mostly based around decorating and events, it feels like the heart of the game is still missing… at least in my opinion. so much focus was put on decorating, terraforming, crafting, etc, that the sense of community, little details and characters that the previous games had were put on the back burner. of course, i know that there’s only so many features that can be put into a game before it begins to feel crowded and overwhelming, but man. i miss pelly, pete, phyllis and the post office. i miss the campsite being an igloo in the winter instead of the usual tent. i miss tortimer’s island, club tortimer and minigames. i miss dr. shrunk. i miss blanca and april fools day. i miss katie and having to escort her to other towns. i miss rover greeting us at the start of the game. i miss a lot, and i know this thread isn’t a discussion about that, but nintendo’s decision to stop updating it has ruined any chance of those features/characters ever returning in this instalment, and that sucks. it’s not a matter of new horizons not having anything to do, the game has plenty of activities; it’s a matter of it still missing something, and that something is incredibly important to me and a lot of other people. at times, it feels more like a decorative spinoff like HHD than it does a mainline animal crossing game because of how much focus is on decoration and terraforming. it’s like nintendo put in terraforming and more creative freedom than ever before (which i’m very grateful for, don’t get me wrong) and went “this should be enough to keep people entertained for years”... but it’s not. there’s only so much decorating and terraforming you can do before you’re content with your island and/or you get burnt out.

on the topic of overwhelming, 2.0 was exactly that. at least for me, and i believe i saw a few others say something similar around the time that it dropped. 2.0 was incredible and brought so much to the game that i (and others) thought would never see the light of day, but the amount of new content that dropped all at once was pretty overwhelming. it’s a personal problem, but i get overwhelmed easily by lots of exciting things going on and being introduced at the same time, and this was made worse by the fact that my cat had passed away just a few days prior and i was in no headspace to be overwhelmed anymore than i already was, even by something as great as 2.0. i still want all the content in the game, but i think it would’ve been more digestible if it was dropped in smaller updates rather than one big one. HHP definitely should’ve been its own update at least. smaller updates would have given us something to look forward to for a while longer, instead of everything dropping in november 2021 and that being the end of it. nintendo adding in the rest of the zodiac figurines in a surprise minor update was lovely, but i imagine that may be the last of their surprises where new horizons is concerned.

i know that some of the community (not anyone on here) were *******s about the lack of content and updates prior to 2.0, but i genuinely don’t understand why they’d stop updating new horizons after less than 2 years when like you said, it’s their #1 best-selling switch game. i get they want to focus on other games such as splatoon 3 and can only add so much to new horizons, but still. plus, the fact that i don’t think they even acknowledged new horizons’ second year anniversary? i’m not talking about a lack of surprise update, or even a second anniversary cake item in-game, either. on march 20th, i checked nintendo’s social media accounts, including the official animal crossing twitter account, and i didn’t see them mention new horizons’ anniversary anywhere. it’s like they’re pretending the game doesn’t exist or isn’t important to them anymore, and that’s just… yikes.

so, no, less than 2 years of updates isn’t really okay, just like them releasing an ‘unfinished’ game wasn’t really okay, either, nor is them not even acknowledging it anymore. it probably doesn’t seem like it considering this post lmao, but i really love new horizons with all my heart, and i hate that nintendo dropped the ball as quickly as they did. i hate that i, and so many others, are getting burnt out so soon and/or have stopped playing entirely. maybe i have high expectations since new leaf kept me (and this community) entertained for a lot longer than 2 years, even without the WA update, but damn.

It would be nice to get more updates for sure. But I knew back when we got prom clothes and whoopie cushions that they were done. Also why give us crap like that instead of things we want? I think the biggest thing for me is not having unbreakable tools. Just why? For me the 2.0 update was their attempt to dump a bunch of the most wanted things back into the game to shut people up but why not unbreakable tools? And some things in general have never made sense to me. Like Labelle. She serves absolutely no purpose. It would've made sense if eventually her "fashion checks" led to her joining her sisters in the shop or an add on to nooks as the new gracie but just to have her do fashion checks forever? Pointless. And Leif should've been added to nooks or got his own shop. Yes he has a stall on harvs island now but he shouldve had a shop sooner and on our islands with new stock daily. I always liked the idea of all the shops being on a separate island but i think the execution was rushed and poorly done. It could've been so much better, like real shops not stalls and having other villagers there shopping that we could invite to our island. I havent really played pc but i can only assume the reason they are updating it in favor of nh is micro transactions and that equals more money from the same game. I personally dont feel that after buying a switch specifically to play this game, the game itself and the guide that i should have to shell out more money for content that we should already have. i'm actually surprised that hhp is the only paid update, i figured they would jump all over that cashcow(and i thought that was why they left out so much in the first place, to charge us for updates). i am still finding ways to enjoy the game but i am really disappointed in how nintendo has handled it.

Satisfied with the first year of updates, which is the general timeframe I expected a game like Animal Crossing to be played. Even more satisfied the developers went above and beyond with the updates on the following 8 months. I didn't expect non-stop updates for years and years; it's not a mobile game and developers of companies almost always need to move on to the next game on the schedule.

1 year and 8 months of updates is completely great, even more considering the sheer amount of content that was added through those updates (even before 2.0). Would I complain if we get a "surprise Isabelle, you thought you had seen the last of me" final final update? Of course not, but it's ok we won't get it.

The idea that just because a game sells well means it should be getting constant updates is nuts and I don't know where people got that idea. Looking at Switch top selling games, most of them get one update pretty soon and nothing else:

MK8DX: Just getting its first DLC, 5 years after release. Not confirmed but almost obvious it's a way to tide until MK10 releases on Switch successor; it wasn't even needed for sales per se but it's a stupidly easy way to make cash.

Smash Ultimate: Fighters, which is the bread and butter since the last releases. It thrives on the hype of the reveals, so it's expected. It's the outlier with almost 3 years of updates- worth noting the 12 fighters were spread throughout those years.

BOTW: Got a season pass on the same year of release. It's one of the most critically acclaimed games ever, but they "ditched" it to focus on the sequel.

SwSh: Got DLC one year after release specifically to replace the old "third version". It got the Max Raid events tho, but not updates.

Odyssey: A very small update a year later. Labo support doesn't count.

Super Mario Party: The online update kind of counts, I guess. Was probably due to MPS releasing and devs applying/testing that with SMP.

Let's GO: No updates.

BDSP: It has gotten some updates, some of them clearly labeled as "we couldn't finish on time" and some being timed mythical events.

Ring Fit Adventure: Got a rhythm update one year after release.

I could go even deeper, but it's easy to see. Splatoon 2 is the most similar to ACNH. Not even going far back on hardware, 3DS stuff almost didn't have updates whatsoever.

And to be honest, large parts of the Animal Crossing fandom don't deserve more updates. I totally understand not wanting to keep working on something (even if you love that project) when a bunch of loud and obnoxious spoiled brats think the world should revolve around their specific tastes; specially when those think non-stop baseless whining is the same as constructive feedback. It's 2022 and people still go around with the "missing" rethoric and hyperbolic statements to make their favorite game look better than it is (usually NL) and NH worse than it is. Big kudos to the devs for releasing the 2.0 update with so much love and care, while they were trying to avoid dying during a pandemic and getting chased off social media by said brats.

I love this game, but the thing that will stop me playing eventually is the lack of new surprises. Currently there are still some recipes and items I don't have from the update, but once there's a lack of new things, there's nothing to get excited about. I'd love to see just some really small, minor additions on a regular basis. Perhaps a new item delivered by post once a month, a release of a few new clothing items in the shop for events, and definitely some dialogue updates. It makes me smile when someone says something funny that I haven't seen before, but this is getting rarer. I feel that once you've been round the calendar once, you've got everything and done everything. There's no incentive to repeat events as the rewards are items you already have and there are no surprises.

This game was released only 2 years ago and people are acting like it's already completely dead. I don't remember how it was with NL's updates, but I started playing two years after it was released and the game was thriving. There was no such talk, the first time I heard something like that was maybe in 2017... Yeah, I think I'll skip this one.

I know this topic has been talked about so many times but at this point I've moved on from the game. Its pretty much complete and Nintendo clearly said last year (again because some people don't seem to understand) that there will be no more major updates after 2.0 and the Happy Home Paradise DLC will be the "Only" DLC they do.

Its like beating a dead horse at this point. The game is not going to get anymore updates because Nintendo confirmed it last year. So its going to be a long wait until the next mainline AC game. I don't mean to sound like a buzz kill or be negative but this is just the sad reality of the entire situation.

The thing for me here is the definition of the word 'major' in 'no more major updates' - The 2.0 update was pretty huge, so I can see they're saying we'll get nothing like that again, fair enough, but will there be further smaller updates, even if it's just a few extra items or DIYs etc. perhaps some changes to events so they're not identical to the previous year. Or, have they completely finished with it and that's it.

Aw I think the animal crossing community is pretty nice, at least here on these forums. I can't speak for the rest of the world because this is the only place I visit. I'm sure there are some pretty terrifying fans out there though! I view your points as less of an animal crossing problem though and more of a society problem. People seem to have such mentality everywhere of "I want these aspects removed from this thing because I personally dont like them" and/or "I'm going to shout about how bad this thing is because it doesnt include certain aspects that I personally think should be included". Sadly it's a situation where there's no pleasing everyone and we just have to make the best of these things!

Regarding game updates, I think they are starting to become a bit more common because today's technology allows for them to happen. Before, a game was released and you got what you were given. Now however, things can be updated and changed via patches, content can be added or taken away. The developers can continue tweaking the games even after their release, for better or for worse.

New Horizons might not be my favorite game in the series but I still very much enjoy it. The last major update seriously improved my opinion of it with all of the new items it added, as I felt that item diversity was something that had been previously lacking. But I gotta admit that I expected a little bit more from Nintendo. I don't know, I guess I'm just one of those people that's still a little bit bothered by that the fact we'll never get more shop upgrades. Plus of a bunch of other things that I wish were different.

Most likely I'm guessing that Nintendo is just working on the new iteration of the game. Obviously they know that there is a huge market for this game what with all the merch that's constantly being released by it so they're probably thinking they can make more money with a new title in the franchise. But then again they could have just kept releasing new DLC for this one along with major upgrades for free players to benefit from as well.

Well this thread already turned into another "Debate"
Debates are great though! It allows you to hear compelling points from various viewpoints and makes for some fantastic discussion. More so than if it's just a bunch of people echoing each other about how great something is (as lovely as that can be, there's not as much discussion). I've even learned new things and changed my own viewpoint based on various "debates" as you call them. People have brought up some super great points in this thread and I'm grateful for all sides of the discussion

I really like the game and the updates kept it fresh and brought new experiences. Happy we got them at all. Two years worth of updates is a long time.

Only thing that was never updated enough imho was the interaction of villagers with items and fleshing them out more as individuals. That is the one point I'm unhappy about with the game in general. It's sad to build a cute playground, a gym or a campsite and have none of the residents use any of the items. Maybe they'll implement that as a feature in other games.

Only 2 years of updates? Fine or not?
Well I'm going to speak for my own self here and not for others I'm going to say my own opinion:
What I wanted from New Horizons was this to be a favorite game I could enjoy for years, I've played a few games similar to Animal Crossing that I thought they would be my favorite game for as long as I wanted but they didn't, I moved on and quit those games now ACNH is my favorite game but it's gotten to the point where when I log on I just clean up things and give gifts to villagers maybe harvest stuff from rocks and trees and then log off, I know I still have over 300 villagers to met and befriend for my photo quest, I still am fishing and bug hunting for models for my collection, I still need to grind all the nook miles achievements, I still can have fun at HHP and re-decorate my island a million times since I love decorating so much, these things will probably keep me on for a while longer. I should know by now I can't always force my self to have fun on my favorite special game some day the day will come I'll move on from New Horizons I know there's always more hobbies for me to do, even if Nintendo made more updates I know it wouldn't be really worth it in the long run because then I'll just get burnt out and even if we could get more updates I don't even know what I want, the only things I still wanted were being able to change your character's name and your island's name, and I guess upgraded terraforming where we could move permanent things that are the things people reset a bunch just to get what they want, being able to move the dock, the peninsula, resident services, river mouths and even the rocks on the beach would be cool but honestly I can live without updates I know one day I'll move on from New Horizons anyways.

I'm incredibly happy with everything that we were given. I don't think anything else could be added (they could have added Blanca for April Fool's Day, but it's okay that they didn't; I can live without her). I would love to be able to change my island rep's name, but that's okay too; we weren't able to do that in previous games either and I didn't expect to be able to. I've played Animal Crossing for twenty years and this is the best game in the franchise (I hated New Leaf and City Folk, but this is not the thread for that; my feelings are lightly related to the bolded statement below)

Thank you for this post, RollingAntony. This is a great post; these are my thoughts exactly and more.

i'm pretty bored of the game already but i don't think it's NHs fault, i played new leaf so much that it just outshines NH in a way that i cant really change for myself. i do think if they updated it more and added more fun stuff i'd be happier with new horizons. new furniture would be super great, like, pocket camp has SOOOOO much cool stuff i'd love to have in new horizons. seems like a missed opportunity, i know they can't make new horizons the big microtransaction cash cow pocket camp is so they probably wont put in the same effort. id love to be wrong.

i do think 2 years is kinda short considering new leaf had a huge update 4 years after release. welcome amiibo was huge and added a lot of spice to the game, IMO.

Not to be this guy but probably in order to make the next game for people to buy.
That would be Splatoon 3.

2 years of updates is fine, but it wasn't really 2 years since there were huge droughts in between those 2 years.

April 2020 brought Redd, the art gallery, and Leif
July 2020 brought summer wave 1: Diving, sea creatures, Pascal/mermaid, Gullivar (3 months)
End of July 2020 summer wave 2: fireworks
End of September: Pumpkins, some hair and reactions (2 months)
Mid November: Dream suite (2 months give/take)
End of February (3 Months) Mario furniture
Mid March (1 month) Sanrio furniture
November 2021 Final Update (7 months)

Like I'm sorry, but this was barely updates. Most of the updates were so measly until they dumped the majority in the 2.0 final update. Yes I didn't add holidays, but I'm sorry, those were already in all the previous games so it wouldn't be fair to count them as an update.

There were a few new holidays such as MayDay, Wedding month, and Museum/Stamp day, but I barely touched them. I only thought MayDay was super innovative, but stamp day felt so uninspired. To me this holiday felt last minute. Like they knew they were getting behind or needed more fluff and put the bare minimum of effort into the holiday just to say they did something.

I am still playing the game currently and am finding it fun because I am playing it the way it's intended, as a designer simulator. But I can't say that the updates were amazing. It's just what it is and I hope the next game chooses to make the entirety of the base-game from launch date.
