Custom Design Signs

Quick question -
I need space for another design in my pockets, and the only one I can think to get rid of is one that is currently displayed on my Custom Sign. If I delete that design and replace it with another, will the next design now be displayed on the sign? Or will the current one stay?

I don't think the current one would stay? Maybe it's different for custom signs but for everything else (paths, clothes, etc.) the design goes blank or gets replaced by the current one.

Depending on what you need the extra spot for, maybe you could just create a side character to hold patterns you don't need to be held by your mayor character, like paths.
