Your preferred method of obtaining new villagers?

I prefer purchasing desired villagers from other players, because I have almost no luck with island hopping and campsite, as well as no amiibo cards on my hands. It's fun and interesting to see villagers I've never met, but seeing them after that a couple more times is less fun.

amiibo for me, especially when I get a voided villager I don't really care for (looking at you Erik and Frita).

Next would be island hopping, although it's very hit or miss (with the only hit being Whitney who I consider a dreamie).

When I needed to get my last dreamie (Bruce/Chief) I used the campsite TT trick and it worked really well. I ended up getting Chief and im really glad I did cause hes a tier 2 villager here :P

I would allow randoms, if I hadn't known that if you do any visiting other islands in this game, it won't be randoms and will instead be people's voided villagers.

So I've been getting my new villagers in multiple ways - Rodney I went to the lengths to buy here because I didn't trust the RNG to find me a smug I'd like, several of my newest ones have been campsite visitors, and a couple have been mystery island finds. If I'm looking for someone specific, I have the resources to just buy the villager from someone here and would much rather do that than make myself miserable grinding for 1 villager out of 391 on mystery islands.

definitely buying from others or mystery island!

Im not planning on landscaping or working on my houses until I have moved all my dreamies in, just focusing on one aspect at a time!!

I prefer purchasing since it's more of a guarantee then island hopping is. Island hopping is fun when you're not looking for aynone specific though. :3

None of the methods seem particularly enjoyable, but my preferred method in New Horizons is utilizing amiibo.

Adopting villagers from other users sounds good, and I did it a lot in New Leaf, but I find that in New Horizons, I'd rather spend my TBT on items that people are selling here on the forums.

Island hopping seems like it would be good too, but RNG is more often cruel than generous, and I'm not interested whatsoever in the gatcha aspect that so many people seem to enjoy.

I only recently constructed my campsite after putting it off for a long time (I really don't want villagers from other people's voids), but having looked over the requirements to perform the campsite method, it seems annoying even if you can get potentially better results.

That leaves me with amiibo. It's not ideal, as I don't really like having to spend real money on these villagers, but it seems to me to be the optimal solution. It seems unnecessary to have us scan them in three times and craft stuff for them before they'll agree to move in though.

I'd much rather just be soft resetting plots like I sometimes did in New Leaf.

I rely very heavily on Amiibos. I really wanted to go the island hopping route, but I found it got frustrating way too quickly for me. I tend to get fixated on certain villagers and won’t settle for anyone else, because my mind is so one-track sometimes. So island hopping can quickly become a nightmare. I’ve also tended to be unlucky overall on Mystery Tours, and tend to end up with villagers that are generally viewed as “ugly” (I wouldn’t say it quite that harshly, but still...). The one exception to this was Kyle, who was my forced smug villager, and he’s staying permanently.

On the other hand, I have had some very pleasant surprises from Mystery Island Tours, so it’s not all bad. I met Spork this way, and he’s really won my heart. I need to let him go at some point so a cranky villager can move in, but I’m determined to get his photo first. For a bottom tier villager, he’s pretty cute and I’ll really miss him. And I never would’ve thought to include him if I hadn’t been forced to pick a lazy at the start of the game!

Since I don't time travel, the best method for me is island hopping. I can stock a lot tickets and do it within the day.

Campsite! That way I don't even have to bother with making someone move out first and worrying if I'll find who I want in the end

either through the campsite or island hopping! i’ve made a vow to myself that i wouldn’t buy or trade for any of my dreamies and that i’d obtain them on my own - it’s difficult at times but i’ve got 5/10 dreamies so far so i guess it’s working out pretty nicely ^_^

Amiibo them in.

That's all I'll ever use thanks to a terrible experience on here.

Random campers and island hopping. I think it's the most fun if I can find villagers myself! Plus, it gives me a use for my hoard of Nook Miles. I've gotten extremely lucky with both methods so far (7/10 dreamies). That said, It's not ideal since one of my dreamies, Lolly, has an incredibly low chance of showing up on an island.

I once tried adopting a villager (Zucker) from a friend, but unfortunately someone had given him lots of presents, so he has a messed-up house with all the wrong tabletop items, and the UGLIEST outfits. Tiny shades paired with some hideous red sports jersey and a white school cap is his go-to outfit for wandering around outdoors. It drives me nuts! So I'm going to let him move out as soon as I have his photo, and probably refrain from adopting villagers from other people in the future unless they're completely original.

@Saga
That's the downside about buying from people. I always make sure to ask if they're completely original, it would annoy me to no end if my villagers walked around in silly attire or had a mismatched interior.

I did island hopping for my original villagers, but now I'm trying to use the campsite for my next villager, mainly because I need a snooty and there's a better chance of getting a snooty through the campsite than island hopping for me, lol

Definitely! If I had been buying from a stranger I would have thought to ask. But because I'd been playing with this friend since Wild World when we were 16, and I knew we had a similar playstyle, it didn't even occur to me to check. What I had forgotten was that since NL came out she had a son (who's now five or six and shares her island), and it seems he decided to play dress-up with Zucker! Haha.

Luckily, the day after Zucker moved in, I got Sherb as a random camper, so I still have at least one cute lazy with normal clothing and furniture. xD

If I have the amiibo I would use that but I've decided that buying from other players is the least tedious option for me.
Having to buy all the tickets and then going through the airport dialogue and then I haven't had good rng ever the whole process is a waste of time for me

I prefer finding them on my own, either via campsite or mystery islands. I've found that almost every villager I traded for I've ended up adopting out. something about finding them on my own makes them more special or something, I dunno!
