You Know, Sometimes...

It makes me feel really...strange. Back when I was little, I loved playing with the likes of Mario, Sonic, Zelda, and other fun "kids" games. But now it seems like all these little kids, and even people my age want to do is play first person shooters. You get called "gay" or "babyish" for playing the colorful Nintendo games I love so much.

I mean, it's not that I'm sad or anything, people can play what they want. I just don't know how or why so many kids are in a hurry to grow up and play these mature games? Heck, I'm a teen and I'm still sitting here playing Animal Crossing almost daily.

Yep! I'd rather play Pokemon or Animal Crossing any day. That's also the reason why the only current gen console I own is the Wii U. I haven't even bothered getting a PS4 or an XBONE, my PS3 and Wii U pretty much do the job for me.

course some ppl liked first person shooters and whatnot but liking "childish" games vs violent ones weren't exactly mutually exclusive lol

it also depends on how they grew up/lived
like i like games like kingdom hearts + nintendo + pokemon + whatever plus getting into games like earthbound and final fantasy but thats because of my older brother, who grew up with the 1st season of the pokemon anime and stuff and has magicthe gathering cards and yugioh cards and all that '90s' junk.

I'm in my second year of Uni and I love them! In fact on the day of Super Smash Bros release, my friend brought his tv and controllers to school and and a whole group of people ( including myself) played and like half the school came to watch. I sucked but, ya know, good fun

Yeah, so it seems. All of these mature rated games like Grand Theft Auto can be a bad influence on children too, yet they're still allowed to play it. My friend's brother is ten and is allowed to play mature rated games, and he acts like a gangster and talks about sex all the time.
They're rated M for a reason.

I always think about this when I bring my 3DS out in public. I never play it, I always keep it locked away in my bag to collect streetpasser-bys.

There's a really uncomfortable stigma around what you're describing. How if an adult/teenager is seen playing a game which has been targeted towards multiple ages then regardless of how old they are, they're weird for finding a game enjoyable which children may find enjoyable too.

Everybody cares too much about their public image. I can 100% put my hands up and say that I care so much how I come across to other people, and I just don't know, but I just do...

But yeah, there's a side of the gaming industry which is slightly confusing. Children playing games targeted towards adults and adults playing games targeted towards children. Heck, I don't care though. I play Nintendo games because they make good quality games.

Shoot em ups like COD and Halo bore me.

Nintendo = innovative-fresh ideas.
the majority of other gaming developers = copy and pasted games w/ slight adjustments.

I've been over to a friend's house a few times, he's always enthusiastic to show me about this "cool new FPS" he got. He hands me a controller and my mind just totally blanks out. It's incredibly boring.
So, okay, you kill people and you win, but what's the purpose?

I wouldn't say I'm a violent person but I enjoy gorey films and I'm not phased by them and I can be seriously violent when angry yet I don't take an interest in COD (im special) but I do like TF2

LRFF13 is the only game I play on my Xbox 360 anymore (i broke an xbox by playing it too much but my mums bf had a spare one thanks dude i dont speak to) but since I got Sm4sh I haven't touched it

I don't want to be on the bandwagon of 'im 12 and im speshul cuz i dont play cod!!!' (ya im 14 nd i dont play cod :///) but yeah I don't play Call Of Duty and I'm practically 100% Nintendo, which is chill bc there are quite a few Pokemon fans in my year/grade. I'm probably going to be a Nintendo fanboy my entire life and I don't see the problem with that, the only problem is the amount of time I spend on Animal Crossing (Two hours spent checking my neighbours, watering flowers, writing ten letters, opening ten letters, seeing the special visitor, doing job at cafe.... it adds up) which is dangerous to my schoolwork.

There's an age when most kids want to feel grown up, even if they're not, and make a point of showing it off as much as they can. That could be why your classmates show off about the games they play and make fun of you (though they shouldn't be doing that). They probably like Nintendo games more than they'd care to admit.

Then there's also an age when people do grow up naturally and lose interest in many of the things they liked when they were younger. People change and even when they may still like some of the things they used to care about, they care less or their priorities change. That could be the case with your classmates too.

I'm older than you are, and I know many people who genuinely don't care about Nintendo games. I do, but for a while in my teens, I didn't really play them because I thought they were for babies. Nowadays, I think they're a nice way to relax after a tough day and I wouldn't make fun of other adults for playing them because there are more important things to care about. Boasting about playing shooters should really immature to me, because if your classmates were really so grown up, they'd be more worried about issues that are relevant to the word and paying the bills than what games you have on your 3DS.

I think in the case of younger people it has to do with "I'm too young to play this game, therefore it's automatically good".

As for everybody else (including younger people) I would say that marketing plays a huge role. Just watch any advertisement for PS4 or Xbone the next time you see one come on. 95% of it are variations of killing people (with 90% of that being in first person) whilst the other 5% is racing games. They'll likely throw in some quote hinting towards these kinds of games being 'the good games', implying that it's what 'the gamers' are playing. Most people are vulnerable to marketing whether they think they are or not.
If the marketing doesn't get you, the fact that your friends have 'it' usually will.


I've never really been into 'violent' games in the sense of "SHOOT ANYTHING THAT MOVES!!!" PEW PEW PEW.
I've always owned a Nintendo consoles as well as Playstation. Even with Playstation, most of the games I played were platformers and RPG's.
The only 'really violent' series I've ever been really into is Metal Gear Solid and even then, you're trying NOT to shoot people for 90% of the game (if you're playing it right). Even when you do have to shoot something, it's usually an over the top fantasy boss rather than hordes of nameless peons (even the 'nameless peons' have dogtags with their personal details on them xD)


My friends who are more into gaming all play generally anything but shooters (except Metal Gear...We all love Metal Gear). Not many of them own a Nintendo console, but they still play games 'in the same spirit'.
My friends who aren't really as much into gaming (okay...I have literally 1 friend who isn't into gaming) only plays CoD and Assassins Creed. Literally, just those two series's. The reasons I hear to why they're 'good' baffle me when he says shortly after that the WiiU has copy and paste games for children...I don't think he's touched a Nintendo console, like...Ever.

Who cares about people and what they think? Just be yourself. I don't care about anyone besides the close ones around me. I play ACNL all day every day. I love gaming.

I'm not sure what age you are but in one of my classes in college most of the class just sits around and talks about nintendo games, new and old. And while I think fps are overrated and not the best influence for young children I don't see why it'd upset you that people play those types of games. You can enjoy rather mature games and still love the heck out of things like animal crossing.

Also, I wouldn't let anyone's name calling bother you. Whoever would try to hurt someones feelings over liking a video game is clearly extremely immature and doesn't really deserve a response.

Really the only FPS that I really have fun with are the games made by Valve, and for good reason.

They actually have variety towards them compared to every other FPS out there.
