It really depends on the sub you go to. Still, I feel like most reddit users are out to either stir trouble/start fights or make a witty/edgy comment. It's like its their mission in life to be the class clown instead of having a discussion about the topic the OP is asking about.

I used to use the place as another means of asking questions for DIY, but between the jokers and the stirrers, you often have to wade through their BS to find someone who may be able to help, discuss something level-minded with you, or find an understanding. I once asked on some subs about hands on projects what their sure-fire techniques for odor removal are. I have a antique chest that stinks so I asked them what they often do to get rid of smells.

Instead I got this incorrigible doofus who decided to keep downvoting me and giving me sass for not showing a picture. I didn't realize you could smell a picture.

I'm addicted to scrolling Reddit but I almost never comment or post. Why? Because tooooo many people on there are super pretentious, holier-than-thou know-it-alls. It is a toxic place.

Although, like the person above me said, it can be better or worse depending on the subreddit.

eh, i admittedly sometimes check out reddit, but i don't have an account nor do i plan to make one. as long as the site continues to host awful cesspool subreddits, like cringe culture ones, ones based around transphobia, bpdlovedones and the like my opnion on the site as a whole will always tilt to the negative.

For the most part for me, Reddit is pretty friendly and relatable, but there are some toxic people on there.

Overall it’s pretty good. I saw some rude comments today on a post but they all got downvoted.

it's the same as any other social media. whether or not you see the toxic side depends largely on how you cultivate your experience. i don't go on reddit too often, but i visit a few subreddits -- usually when i need troubleshooting -- such as the subs for hogwarts mystery, AC:PC and two for mangas i read. i've never really commented, but everyone seems perfectly nice/civil from what i've seen. (well, slightly less so on the manga ones, but i think that's more a fandom thing than a reddit one.) two youtubers i watch also have their own subreddits they make videos on that seem perfectly friendly.

Completely depends on the subreddit. 90% of political discussion is pointless and toxic. Just a bunch of echo chambers and emotion-fueled hate with no logic. Hobby subreddits are nice. I hate when people stalk your post history and use it to discredit you. One told me I was mentally ill(which you shouldn't just call people) and that my opinion was invalid, so that's nice. I am addicted to the site and blocked it on my computer though, so it clearly does something for me. I think it's nice for some casual intellectual discussion, and sometimes I use it as a search engine for questions because I prefer hearing from real people instead of an article from an employer who has to follow rigid guidelines on what they can and cannot say. Most articles are too verbose for me, but most reddit comments get to the point.

In my experience, I've seen nothing but awesome stuff. But I also don't go on the heavily controversial stuff so that is probably why. I go there for gaming reviews and it hasn't let me down once.

Reddit users seem to have an entire stereotype dedicated to how unfunny they are (keanu reeves chungus wholesome 9000 amongus sussy moment amirite guys?) and I see a lot of bad people on there, but my experiences with the platform haven't been the worst, all I really used it for was asking questions about a certain phone I had at the time a few years ago and the people on the subreddit I was on were helpful, so it probably just depends on where you look. My mom is a reddit user and I see her constantly starting flamewars with people, so I can't say it's all good

i don't know how much my vote counts, since i don't actually have a reddit account, but when i search up really specific questions on google, 9 times out of 10 a reddit post will come up that answers my question perfectly, along with answering follow-up questions i didn't know i had. so in my opinion, reddit is helpful, but i'm sure there are sides to it that i'm not seeing.

Any popular place has a lot of people riling each other up. I usually just stick to small subreddits about niche interests.

Like everyone above me has said: depends what subreddits you use. Bigger ones, especially those built around topics where people are bound to have divisive opinions (politics, news, music, social justice, etc) obviously devolve into toxicity and Internet slap-fights quite easily.

I mainly use smaller subreddits where people share in mutual hobbies and interests. Those are far more fun and supportive! For AC fans, r/NoFeeAC is a community of absolutely amazing, generous, and kind-hearted individuals. I highly recommend you check it out! ❤️

Of course, it's the Internet, where people are at their most uninhibited and unhinged because they're anonymous. I'd say most social media is "toxic" in that sense, no matter where you go. But there are kind-hearted, friendly places on Reddit, for sure.

Reddit, just like every other social media platform, will have toxicity. I personally don't really read into comments that much. I don't think Reddit is as bad as Twitter, as an example. But the reality is, since social media platforms are open to everyone, there's bound to be people bringing toxicity with them. It's best to just detach from it. If you notice a certain community/subreddit/etc is such, I'd say either just ignore it or if it's affecting you a ton, to no longer be part of it. You have to do what's in your best interest in the end.

I stay away from reddit, as well as any social media other than forums. I’ve come to realize that aside from forums, there is a lot of toxicity. I find some of the replies to either be jokes, insensitive, or both. I know that no places are safe from toxicity, but there sure is a whole lot less of it on forums. I started using the internet around the time online forums were big. I grew up with forums. It sucks that social media is the big thing now because most platforms people are using, I have zero interest in.

All of this toxicity makes me wish that forums could regain popularity. I’m not big on social media because of the toxicity and how it’s used. Mainly, it’s just pictures used to show off and people mindlessly scrolling to see how much better someone else’s life is. It’s a (negative) vicious cycle…
Yeah I agree. I feel like people use social media more cause of ease and less brain energy required (at least that's the case with me) cause with social media you can just sign up and scroll wherever without really thinking about it. But having to usually be accepted into forums and follow all the rules is what makes forums better. I've noticed that there are obviously toxic things in this server, but it's honestly my ideal "social media"

My boyfriend asked me this once because he liked Reddit and I jokingly said, "Isn't Reddit like the birthplace of incels?" And the out of curiousity I searched google today, and no joke there are published journals regarding incel culture on Reddit. 💀

That being said, I go on specific subreddits for my games and hobbies (they're all nice and small communities), but rarely interact in general. There are definitely toxic people and toxic communities, and I hate having to see this negative energy whenever I browse bigger subreddits. As others said, every social media has their toxic people, Reddit not exempted.

I follow this one subreddit (r/nothowgirlswork or smth like that) and occasionally people post screenshots of other redditos' comments being misogynistic or stereotyping women. The comments are really... disturbing and concerning. 😩

It depends on the subreddit. I posted to show off my wisdom teeth that I had just gotten removed (don't ask... I like the aesthetic xD) and the people really liked it at first, but then it got flooded with comments of people being disgusted... even though it was in a subreddit for morbid or weird pictures. Huh. Also asked a subreddit for recommendations of songs from a particular artist and one person went off on me for being lazy and how I could have listened to all their songs in the time it took to post the question... even though it took 4 minutes max to post and this band had a LOT of songs. I have plenty of bad experiences. But also, my personal favorite subreddits like petmice or tamagatchi are absolute safe havens and filled with the kindest people.

So, there are some very mean and nasty people on there, moreso than other sites I've been on. I say on a scale, it's worse than aspects of instagram, but does not compare to things like twitter or 4chan in terms of toxicity.

like others have said, it really does depend on the subreddit. for me, the answer is no because the only subreddit i use is askreddit, and i always skip the controversial threads. i’ve yet to encounter any of the toxicity or ‘incel behaviours’ that often gets talked about, but i’ve definitely seen some questionable content and unnecessarily rude posts/people on there — which isn’t exclusive to reddit. every social media has that.

i’ve personally seen more unnecessary fights and cruelty on instagram, tiktok and twitter than i have on reddit, so i’d say that those 3 are more toxic.
