Noticed that both of them are fairly cheap for a preorder 3DS game on Amazon at the moment, so was thinking I probably might get one of them. I haven't played any games in the Mystery Dungeon series before, so I don't know what to expect, and I haven't really played Final Fantasy games much before, plus I heard that the main game is pretty short, and the post-game isn't that exciting. What usually happens in the Mystery Dungeon games? Is it strongly story based or is it more sandboxy, as in open-world and replayable like the normal Pokemon games after you've finished them (did notice that in a "let's play" that there were chapters)?

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is a bit of both, as pre-final boss, it is very heavily story based (and arguable post), but post is more open, with new dungeons opening up w/ different mini-story lines opening up.

If you were to pre-order one, I would go with Pok?mon Super Mystery Dungeon. I've played several games in the series, and Super is probably the definitive game in the franchise.

Like pokedude729 said, it's a bit of both. At least the others in the series have been; I'm still working my way through this one.

I'd say Super Mystery Dungeon. Though I personally don't know much about the other game. I have played through quite a bit of the new mystery dungeon game and I quite like it so far. You probably can't go wrong either way though.

I pre ordered Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, from what I heard its better than Gates to Infinity

Think from the poll it's fairly clear which I'll be choosing. :) Perhaps might buy FFE at a later date when some reviews come out.

I'm sick of Mystery Dungeon. I've played the games so many times that new Mystery Dungeon games just don't seem at all that enjoyable. That's the main reason I returned Gates to Infinity one day after purchasing it. I instead bought Sticker Star, which was worse that GtI imo.

Unless Super Mystery Dungeon has something new and/or innovative that's incredible, I'm most likely getting Final Fantasy Exploerers.

Well that's interesting. FF:E has overtaken Mystery Dungeon now. Last day to preorder FF:E on Amazon now, not sure whether to go for it anyway - I would like another good online multiplayer experience on the 3DS seeing as I've played MH4U to death.

Idk about explorers, I saw GameXplain's 8 Minute gameplay video and it looks so slow, but I've never played any of the Pokemon Mystery games so I dunno what to suggest truly.

I just voted explorers anyway.

Final Fantasy Explorers is a mediocre game that doesn't do much of anything well. It's more like an MMO than MH, and doesn't have a whole lot of content. Some Japanese players finished the single player parts in less than 10 hours. Unless you plan on mostly playing with friends/in multiplayer mode, I'd say skip it.

I thoroughly enjoyed Super Mystery Dungeon. The main story takes a good 30+ hours, and then you have tons of hours after the epilogue since you can recruit all Pokemon. I usually hate grindy games, but it didn't feel like that at all. There's also a lot of strategy needed in terms of item usage, and the difficulty of the post-game can get downright brutal. I highly recommend it!

I've never played Final Fantasy, but it's probably better than Super Mystery Dungeon. Out of all five games in the series, I rank it 4th. The story was good I guess, but the recruiting concept just isn't as good or as fun as the previous titles (save for Gates to Infinity, as always). Not only that, but it's way more challenging and it's often difficult to progress. Plus the 3D art style just doesn't look as good as the pixel style from the older titles.

If you're going to try a Mystery Dungeon game, I recommend Explorers of Sky (the best one) or Blue Rescue Team (which is the first so it has a fresh concept and beautiful story). Explorers of Sky honestly kept me entertained for years. Even now after logging maybe 200 hours in it, I could start it up and play another 200 more.
