are getting so silly, don't you think?!

some examples that i've seen have been

* Don't shop on main street
* Dont visit without asking
* Don't chop trees - obviously the majority of us are not going to do this and if someone was going to chop your trees do you really think they'd take this rule into consideration?!

it's like.. what's the point adding me to be your friend if you have so many rules?!

Some people are actually kind of rude and do chop down trees. My friend has had other friends over who chopped down her island trees without her permission.

The don't visit without asking one is more of if you wanted to meet up with a select few friends and someone else happened to jump in, I guess.

Don't shop on Main Street makes me giggle because that's always the first thing I do when I go to a friend's town.

"Don't visit without asking" is silly. If you're opening for a trade or something, close your gates after that person has entered. How are you supposed to ask anyway, unless you have the other person on an IM or something.

I don't understand the 'no shopping' one. Unless the host hasn't shopped themselves, then its reasonable.
The don't visit without asking - They may be doing a trade with someone, and wouldn't appreciate someone visiting :p

Rules are rules. Don't like someone's rules - Don't visit their town.

The shopping thing is people want the opportunity to buy the stuff they wanted out of the shop first, I think. But that's easily solved by not opening gates until you buy the things you want that day first.

Most visitors I've had are very polite though, and generally ask before they do a lot of things. They'll ask if they can visit main street or ask if they can explore the town. I have had a few that went and did it without asking, but again... I make sure my town is ready for visitors before I open my gates. I'm also kinda laid back about things. If people take some fruits, I don't really care. They grow back. If they take flowers or cut down trees, I don't care. I haven't done the landscaping I want to do yet anyway, so it's no loss. I don't leave items randomly lying around my town, so there's nothing to steal *but* flowers. I guess they could rip me off on trades/sales, but I haven't had that yet. Most people here seem nice and try to follow whatever was agreed upon.

If people really did something terrible, you could always hit the WiFi switch and nothing they did will be saved.

My favorite is "don't go inside houses!"

Yeah, I don't get that one either. You can't steal stuff from houses. I can only think of these possibilities:

1) Person's house is a mess and they're embarrassed by it.
2) Person has stuff they don't want you to know that they have. Maybe they have stuff in their house that, unless they were a TTer or traded with a TTer, it would make no sense for them to have. Best example I can think of is if someone has the whole set of zodiac items.
3) This is slightly less likely I think but... Person is trying to set up a certain room theme and are in the process of it. They don't want you stealing their idea. There's some people out there with some pretty unique rooms out there that would be hard to replicate unless you are blatantly copying (usually involves custom patterns and unique placements, like people who make chair mazes and such). People who are trying to participate in some room decorating contest could also fall in this.

I always check my shops before opening my gate and I buy anything I want for myself. After that people are free to help themselves to anything that's still left. I don't really see the problem..

When you visit, don't leave the concrete until I come pick you up.

Never have tools in your hands.

Don't wear hats.

Yeah. Every time I go to a friend's town they always bought everything good so I'm stuck with the leftovers.

These are the best rules.

"don't talk to my villagers!" lol

some people are taking the game too seriously. if someone has a huge list of rules, no way am i visiting them, what am i going to do, just stand there?

Yeah...this one always gets me as well. I'm the same as you, those with a long list of rules generally don't get added as friends.

I usually buy the good stuff from stores in the morning so thats not a problem for me.

I just go by common sense - don't destroy stuff. xD

Well... You could argue the person is paranoid that villager might move away to your town.

I haven't heard that yet, but I honestly wouldn't be surprised. The "stay by the train station and do nothing else" rule is so pervasive that I actually don't leave that area unless I'm invited to, even when I visit people that I'm pretty sure trust me not to wreck things. Just a habit I guess.

My rules
#1. Do not steal. (I put this on the list because I've seen too many people say the following,
a moron said:
Durr did you SAY people aren't allowed to take ur flowers? cuz if U DIDN SAY they COULDNT, they just didn't KNOW hurr hurr derp
#2. Do not pluck my damn clovers. (so many people do this.) (God damn, piss off with the clover plucking, I like them. ._.)
#3. Please ask before buying 95% of the time you can however. I just think it's incredibly rude not to ask before hand.

Oh god, the people that say don't talk to my villagers kill me. They're not just going to up and go to another person's town just because someone else talked to them. Yeah it's possible if they're ALREADY MOVING or you TT too far or whatever, but come on. Just no. No.

I once visited a town and I couldn't even leave the pavement of the Train Station.
I ventured off the pavement and was yelled at. I asked if I could go to Main Street and do some shopping and was not allowed to. The host didn't even talk to me at all besides telling me "No". :/
