• Our 2026 Easter egg hunt has concluded and the egg locations have been revealed. Congratulations to Xara, Millysaurusrexjr, and xlisapisa for winning a Golden Easter Egg! Meanwhile, TBT's Fifth Egg Decorating Contest remains open for submissions through Thursday!

Why is everyone so mainstream?

Part of it is just that the popular ones are a hell of a lot easier to find in the trade center. The only smug villagers I like are Tex, Zell, and Marshal. I see the last two almost every day, but I've been here for months and haven't seen Tex pop up yet.

I don't really believe all the "people want them because they are popular"

These villagers were popular before the release of the game. When the first images on new villagers started showing up, guess who were the ones people were all "omg i want u"? The popular villagers now. They all have reasons to be on top tier (Ankha/Lucky are very well thematic villagers, Stitches is a teddy bear, Julian is a unicorn, Marshal looks like a tsundere marshmallow, Merengue is a food character that has strawberries as horns, Skye is a cute light-blue wolf, Marina and Zucker are rare aaand have a cute design)

They mostly (if not all) have a cutesy design with some kind of appeal that makes them different. Made of food (Zucker, Merengue), a different colour (Skye, Marina, Diana), something that makes them very unique (example: Julian is the only unicorn in the game, Lucky is the only mummy, Ankha is the only pharaoh, etc) expression (Marshal, Punchy, Beau), and sometimes even overall design (Fauna, for example) makes them appealing to a larger group of people.

And, thinking about it, what if someone decides they want Marshal because he's popular? Maybe they like the challenge, maybe they like having popular villagers. As long as they are happy with their town, I don't think there's something wrong.

Basically this ^

To the original OP, people like what appeals. Thats why they have cows that look ugly and arent popular, to the cute adorable marshal or marina

Well, I have a few tier ones. I wanted a cutsie colorful town so most of my villagers are colorful. I have wanted Stitchface since ww, and my son gave him to me. Squirrels are my fav species so I wanted 4 to represent my kids. Static, for my oldest who's fav color is purple , peanut for my pink luving daughter, my sweet filbert for another son and the marshmallow for my youngest who's scowl looks just like his. The bubblegum sisters go great with my color scheme. I also have Diana, because I luv her design. And then there's Bunnie and bam who remind me of my mom and husband. :)

I know for a fact a good character design will make people crazy (us crazy). I've seen Fauna and Beau over and over in every signature, but is only because the character creates a great empathy with the players, and for example, Merengue design goes GREAT with pink town, so of course she's part of a bigger design-art concept as a villager! Having the ability to see potential in what other people doesn't is a gift, but still certain characters are just made to be lovable. And actually the whole world moves into 'picking your favorite one thing' meaning, anime characters, movie stars, singers and they all got their fans base on how appealing their 'personality', same happens here. Marshall represents uniqueness for each of us, even if this uniqueness is shared. <3

It's not that nobody likes the "unpopular" villagers, just... not as many. Most of my dreamies are apparently trash-tier, sans Cakehorse and Octavian. But it's not like I wanted Merengue because everybody has Merengue, or Octavian because everyone has Octavian. I just like them the most. And as for my smug rep, Chadder's tier 5. I still like them, just not many others do. Aside from Coco (who was there form the start), all my dreamies from Merengue down to Rodeo took the same amount of work to get, the same amount of TBT, the same amount of time travel. Hell, Zucker's in my town right now and I can't stand him (He's reserved already; don't get your hopes up). Are you saying I should like him because he's popular?

So what if they're more "mainstream?" One villager would be the most popular no matter what. If everyone suddenly wanted Hazel the unibrow squirrel someone would get mad about how having her is a high praise to RNGeezus and not fair on everyone else, or something like that. And if 95% of people hunting for Diana just gave up and stuck with Elise and Naomi, there would be a shift there too. It happens.
