Why is everyone so mainstream?

Honestly I love all Villagers based on appearence. I'll treat all the villagers equally unless they are ugly. My only 2 Dreamies are Lucky and Biskit and that's because I had them when I played City Folk.

I actually got Marshal as one of my first random move-ins last February.
I have Whitney because she was in my first Wild World town.
I just recently got Punchy because he was one of my first 5 villagers in my original, corrupted New Leaf town.
Other than that I don't think my villagers are too mainstream? Anyway, everyone likely has his or her personal reasons for liking villagers, be it looks, familiarity, "Oh this one moved in l guess I'll keep it", or something else entirely. :p

A lot of my favorite villagers are the "bottom of the barrel" ones lol, villagers like Marcie, Bertha and Twiggy are all considered "bottom of the barrel" but I love them!!!!. The only thing I hate about the villager trading section being saturated with top tier villagers is that it's hard to find the ones I want because to be honest I don't really like a lot of the top tier villagers (not trying to be a hipster, honest).

Don't think that I am too mainstream. I wanted some of the popular villagers because I truly wanted them, not due to popularity but because I thought they were cute. I got Marina for person reasons (I enjoy marine biology so I just had to have the pink octopus), and Beau cause he reminds me of a friend of mine.

The rest of my villagers are not very popular, Antonia, Boomer, Brofinna, Bunnie, Lily, Rosie.

Rosie was a random move in and I tried to get her out for the longest time, then my dog, Rosie, passed away so I decided that I would keep Rosie the kitty in my town to remind me of Rosie my dog.

I decided recently that I would play just to play and enjoy the game. I started to redo everything becaus I always thought my town needed to fall under the same standard of everyone elses, that it wasn't pretty if it didn't have paths and things were in a layout and I have to say that I am enjoying the game much more now.

Ya for a while I was feeling pressured to put paths down everywhere because whenever I visited someone elses town their paths always looked so nice and organized and it made their town look nice but to be honest I hate putting down paths because it takes forever and there isn't a fast way to do it. I just build the town that I want to build now, who cares if someone thinks it look ugly.

Good for you. I don't have any Tier 1 villagers either. Those villagers that you are constantly seeing in signatures are Tier 1 villagers, which means everyone likes them, which means they're popular, which is why you are seeing it in so many towns. The reason why no one likes/has any unpopular villagers is because they're unpopular. Does this make sense?

hipster lol
the reason i have them is because i like them, certain people have certain villagers that they like. so i guess they appeal to a lot of people

Because they're cute/good looking, that's why people like them. People just have common taste in villager design.

People perfer kawaii desu villagers in this fandom a lot.
Not to mention, those villagers are profitable.

I'm such a hipster to the point in which Rooney is my favorite villager of all time, a tier 5 villager mind you.

lol the Kangaroos are awesome!! I want more for my town, I only have Marcie at the moment.

A lot of the villagers I like that are mainstream are because I've adored them since I first played WW and that's not gonna change.

I never even knew about Lolly, for example, but she was one of my original villagers in my NL town and she grew on me; she's my mayor character's bestie.

But then I also have Ken. Not a popular villager by ANY means, I wasn't happy when he moved into my town, but he grew on me.

My point is that people like who they like. Some are for obvious reasons...they're cute and some just creep up on us and we're like, "Okay...you can stay."

Sorry...migraines make me loopy and this made a lot more sense in my head.

There was a thread in the main New Leaf board the other day asking what under-rated villagers people liked and there were a lot of replies from people saying they didn't like a lot of the mainstream characters. If you have a read around you will find other people with the same character tastes as you.

There are probably dozens of threads like these... I'll answer what I usually answer, that the reason is simply that people like the design of certain villagers more than others. The dialogue in the game is very repetitive since it's the same among personalities, so the main reason to want a villager in your game over another is just that you like their design or their houses. Those lists might not even be representative of everyone who plays ACNL, just the people who are on this forum. If you think about what the majority of users seem to like (like cute stuff, for example), it's clear that there are some villagers who fit those requirements more than others. For some people, the hype around them may play a part but I don't think that's how most people think. It's the same thing with town themes, you hear about themes like food and Disney all the time.

Personally, the villagers I like are all over the years. Most of them are pretty unpopular. I don't feel like I'm special.

Yeah I agree I think that most of the tier one villagers are in everyone's signature. I wish they could add another tier called Fairly desired.

Why are you so hipster?

Lol, jk. But,

I guess it does get a bit boring seeing the same villagers, but it shouldn't bother you so much. We don't even try to be mainstream, we just find a lot of tier ones appealing. We can have whatever villagers we want, we don't base our preferences off of tiers, at least I don't. And I'm sure a lot of others don't. So don't let it get to you. We all love the same game after all.

My Dreamies (erm, when people mean this do they mean their "dream team" of villagers, or just villagers they want but don't have yet?) aren't really mainstream. The only "mainstream" one is Merengue... My Dreamies are Hopper (because he was in my town in ACWW), Carmen (because she has my birthday), Wart Jr. (because the evil villain from SMB2 had a son.). I don't think they are really mainstream...
