Why are cicada shells rare?

I wonder if the game has a mechanic where some critters are more likely to spawn on some islands than others, even the ones that are supposed to be common. This would explain why I've seen creatures some people never seem to find but struggle with others that some players find really easily. This is just a theory, of course.

It would have been datamined and found out by now, so I have my doubts on this.


In other news, I found another cicada shell 20 minutes ago... outside on the fence irl. :u

I found some early July, but they definitely seemed to become much rarer as July and August dragged on.

I remember finding one in the beginning of July whenever we got all the new bugs and have probably only seen them a handful of times since. idk why they're so rare tbh
