I’m debating whether I should get islanders I currently have, or new islanders that I don’t. What would you guys do, or what have you done when buying amiibos?

If it we're me... I'd go with villagers I don't have, who are, at the same time, my dreamies.

If I already have them in your island, I'd rather spend it for other villagers I desperately want to have. But first, if I can try and get them via islands, campsite or adoption, I'd go with those options first.

If you get a card for the favorites you already have then you can let them walk when they ask without risk and search for a new villager that you want... Then scan the favorite back in to replace another villager you don;t want..

Hard decision really as both options have pros and cons.

I have my favorites’ amiibo cards from years ago when I would trade my extra Welcome Amiibo cards to get the really popular cards like Marshal and Ankha. The good thing is you can let your favorites go to try new villagers you never had, knowing you can scan them back in anytime.

I actually bought an amiibo card of one of my starting villagers in case I want him back after I moved him out.
I'm not sure if I want Coach to be on my island long term, but at least I'll be able to get him back if I miss him.
I was glad that his card was a pretty good price or I probably wouldn't have gotten it for awhile.
I have also considered getting Peanut and Fuchsia's amiibo cards, but those are more expensive.

First I got a few Amiibos of villagers I thought I might want to invite to my island. Invited three via cards I bought.

Now I'm to the point where I'm hesitant to move out any of my current villagers because I've gotten attached to them, so I've started buying Amiibos of the ones that will be next to move out in case I decide I want to move them back. Insurance! Would suck to have them be a stranger and have to build up the friendship again, but it's reassuring nonetheless.

I'd want to purchase my favourites, in case I wanted to move them back in. They're a little small, but they could make for some nice collectible pieces.

The other option (if you can get them for cheap, such as by purchasing fan-made ones), is to get new villagers that tend to be really expensive on the villager market, like Marshal. If you want them, then you'll easily be able to move them in without having to spend a lot online!

If you already have your dreamies then I would get their amiibo cards, so that if you ever find someone interested from the campsite or mystery islands you can invite them over without having to find your dreamies again if you want them back =) I did that with Genji since I already have a bunny villager and am not that into jocks, so now his slot is a cycling slot so I can meet different interesting villagers 😊

It's not a bad idea to acquire amiibo of your current residents as backups if you want them as permanent residents, but if you have any favorite villagers who you don't currently have living on the island and are willing to kick out some of the villagers on your island that you don't like as much, then I would prioritize getting amiibo of new villagers. I would only really consider getting the current residents' amiibo after the fact if they moved out accidentally/unexpectedly.
