what's weird to me is that the shiny gengar looks normal to me, and the regular one doesn't. I think in the older days gengar used to look like the second one(the shiny one)

In the first generation, Gengar's sprite was very dark in colour. In generation 2, Shiny Gengar became the same dark colour and normal Gengar became more purple. It's been the same ever since.
