What’s the deal with villagers being original?

They're not considered original if they've been gifted clothing (and wear it) or had their catchphrase changed.
I'm not...too sure why it's a big deal, I thought Isabelle could reset those two things but I may be mistaken; I have never tried it.

It doesn't really affect gameplay. However, it can affect the experience! For example I once gave Marina a really ugly shirt by accident and hatedddd seeing it on her because the octopus model doesnt work well with a lot of clothes... and the shirt was ugly to begin with. Anyways, it can definitely affect your enjoyment of a villager especially if someone gave them some really ridiculous clothes. It's not a big deal to some, but to others, it could make or break an adoption.
I think some people also don't want to be reminded of who the villager came from, you want to feel like the villagers have just been on your island, you don't want to feel like they're talking about some other player. And stupid clothes can be fun, but not if someone else gave them that. Personally I wouldn't mind, but then again I don't even hate villagers having bugs and fish stacked in their homes which also seems to be something people don't usually like
Oh! I thought they were only original if they had been given clothes, had their catchphrase changed, and were from a mystery island. What I wanted to know was why people were so hellbent on getting a 100% original mystery island villager
I'm an original whore, the answer to why I'm like this is because people seem to like causing fashion disasters and tainting their poor villagers by committing the crime of having terrible taste. the catchphrase can easily be reset by Isabelle, but clothing is extremely hard to get rid of and if you don't like it, you're stuck with it for a long time.
I'm very particular with what my villagers wear so it always annoys me when I see them wearing something I didn't give them lol.

I didn't realise there was a much of requirement on how they were brought into our islands to be fair - that's kind of new to me (kind of, I know plenty of people didn't want amiibo move ins for a time but I believe that was due to all the apparent glitches they brought with them).

i would care if i was buying a villager from someone, but personally i like to make my villagers unique, it add to their personality imo
Catchphrases can. Clothes and furniture cannot, unless clothes are a custom design. Some people want them fully original or they want to dress their villagers themselves
From reading here, Isabelle is basically broken. People have gotten villagers with obscenity clothing and reporting only removes them temporarily. I’d like to give clothes to my villagers, but since some or all of it can replace furniture in their houses, that’s a big no.
Can't really explain why I prefer original villagers very well oops but I can say I do like having my villagers be default and just the way they are. Makes them feel kinda clean in some sense??? I only gift my villagers clothing if I don't like their default clothing but their interior better be 100% original or I riot.
Dunno if I want bugs or fish in their house because they start throwing away all the stuff that makes their room less unique and appealing. Then again, I'm probably gonna do it anyway to fulfill their requests. As for clothing, it eally depends if their shirt they're given actually suits them. EX: basket ball jersey on Kid Cat is fine.
