What's the deal with smugs?

Marshal just did this. I'm trying not to talk to my dreamies so much right now in order to get non-dreamies to move out but he's cute.

smugs are scammers. i've had them try to sell things to me where they say "oh at the train station it'll cost you 1,856bells but for you i'll sell it for 2,492bells." they sell paintings for 7k too...you'd think for a painting that expensive it'd be real but nope! i've gotten fake ones i paid 7k+ for.

Actually that's never happened to me before and I've got 2 Smugs now, at first Lionel sold me a few fake paintings but then they became consistently legit and today Marshal sold me a fake one...great way to start the friendship dude...

It's all part of the initiation into the smug club.
