But you just contradicted yourself. You say that peoples' opinions don't influence you at all, then go right on to say that they hype drives you nuts. ???

I usually don't look up or read too many opinions because I truly don't care who others think is great for whatever reason and then I just grow to like who I like. The only reason I look them up sometimes is when I cycle to try to find out who wants what villager so I can give them away.

If you don't take hype personally you'll have a lot more fun.
 
I wanted to see why so many people liked him, so I just moved him into my main town when I had him in my cycle town, not intending to keep him. Now I like him enough that he'll probably be permanent, assuming he doesn't leave on his own. There's also the fact that I plot resetted him into the wrong place and had to move stuff around, and now I really like how it looks, so. He's cute, my only smug, and I like his house.

But now, I understand Marshal's greatness~

-> He's. A. Squirrel.
-> LOOK AT THOSE ADORABLE FEATURES~ AHHHHHHH THE CHEEKS~ HIS COLD STARE LOOKS CUTE TOOOOO~~
-> His personality- which is smug- is quite a hit with a fair amount of the Animal Crossing community, so...Yeah.

I think he's cute, and I like his grouchy face. He's not one of my dreamies, though, so I would always trade him away.

I think the cute factor accounts for a lot of his hype. I think the hype itself accounts for the rest. Some people like popular things. They want "the best" and believe that means what other people love.

Personally, I pick my favorite villagers based on looks and personality. A few happen to be popular, and a few are not popular at all.

I picked my dreamies based on my towns theme, so I even ended up picking a few villagers who aren't my own favorite. For instance, I think Peggy and Gala are ADORABLE pigs, but I chose Agnes to get an uchi. Agnes is growing on me though as I continue my search for her :)
 
Alot of the top tier are nothing special. Then you have cute little dogs like cherry and other really cute cats that get bottom tier it makes no sense. Stitches looks pretty cute that is about it
 
Ever get the idea, that maybe, JUST maybe, it really is a matter of opinion? I mean, you can say YOU don't think he's cute. But other people in this thread say "He is KAWAII!".

So, the big deal with that squirrel guy is just several people sharing the same opinion that he is the cutest.
You don't agree? Well then, you are a part of that other side of people that say he isn't cute or say "He looks weird, I don't like him :(".

So yeah, that is probably why he is popular. Either that or people are just crazy and weird and have terrible opinions on villagers ;).
