For me it's the sims 4.

I've spent a ridiculous amount of money on almost all the dlc for it (to be fair though, I never payed full price for any of it. Most of them I bought 50% off a little at a time) I've also sunk hundreds of hours into playing it and yet... I don't think it's that great of a game.

There's so much that's just not good about it. The closed world and constant loading screens, lack of customization options, and the bland shallow gameplay leave so much to be desired. Don't get me wrong there are certain things it does very well! But as a whole the experience is severely lacking in a big way. But what I don't understand is... if I don't like it so much why do I keep playing it???

It's the only game I really play consistently these days and despite all of it's shortcomings I keep coming back to it and I have no idea why.

Anybody else have a similar love/hate relationship with a game?

For me it's The Sims 3. That game has so many glitches that oftentimes it is unplayable, making me leave incredibly frustrated. When it actually works however, I will almost always have a great experience.

I feel exactly the same way.
Most of the games I have a love/hate relationship with are games I played when I was younger. For instance, I enjoyed playing Mighty Switch Force on my 3DS, but I also found it to be extremely frustrating.

For me it's kinda Fallout: New Vegas.

I do like the game, but the other day when I was playin it, I came across a glitch(?) that prevented my character from moving at all. Nothing I did helped. No button mashing, and the only menu I could open was the save/restart menu, and for some reason I couldn't save. I looked up ways to try to fix it, but in the end I had to restart from a previous save.

So then I turn I play again and go to the jail house to buy some stuff. After I'm done talk to the guy, I turned and the ENTIRE game froze up on me, I couldn't do absolutely anythin but shut off the power. This was at most, half an hour after I had experienced being unable to move. Like, I didn't even load anythin, all I did was turn. Later I found out the Fallout games are just kinda buggy and the game Fallout 4 would have been better, if it had not been for its constant glitches holding it back :/

Skyrim. I love it, but it tends to make me all dark and depressy after a while, probably because a lot of it is kind of bleak-looking and grey. I'm excited for the next Elder Scrolls game, though!

Fez, I guess? Great game but navigating your way around can be a pain in the neck.

I guess the latter two games in the Zero Escape trilogy? I didn't really enjoy the direction the plot started going in with Virtue's Last Reward, and I wasn't a big fan of how they wrapped things up in the last one, but at the same time, I couldn't put them down, either, and I did like the characters from VLR. I guess I'm glad I played them if only to see how things turned out.

For me, it's pretty much any MMORPG. I love the worlds, the quests, the character customization, etc. But I hate the forced interaction with other people. There will always be quests and dungeons that can't be completed solo no matter how good you are and I hate PvP.

I wish there were more games where you could get a good RPG experience without the MMO part.

MMORPGs and PvP games in general for me too but for a different reason. I do like playing with other people and even the competitiveness of PvP and ranked modes, getting good gear, etc. Although it does get to be a little too overwhelming sometimes. I'm always pressured to take part in world events and do things where I'm always pitted against others, when sometimes you just want to explore the world and chill out from time to time lol. I'm playing a lot of Splatoon lately and although it's not an MMORPG, I do hate the grind to get all the good abilities on gears and actually be good enough to play better players and progress into higher ranks. In general, games like that are fun to me but can also get too overwhelming. They also suck out way too much of my time that I no longer have to give to gaming.

This is exactly what I am wishing for too. That there would be more RPG games in general online that don?t have the MMO part or other players in them. Think like a kind of game with a tutorial that doesn?t end until you finish the game, so it?s basically RPGs in general, but online.

As for me, I have a solely hate relationship with MMORPGs due to several opinions I have on them, one being the other players part, two being all the micro transactions that are way too tempting in some of them, and three I feel like MMORPGs overall are kind of going out of style for the most part, and if they aren?t yet, they will be soon in the future and something better and new will replace them hopefully.

Anyway, I can?t really think of any one series of games that I do have a love/hate relationship with. Usually if I hate a game even a little bit, I don?t play it. I know that limits my options, but I also get to enjoy everything I play because of it and am able to have fun with it. :)

Gonna have to say sonic 06 was my titan, I absolutely despise this game and I remember getting so mad at it I had to leave the room and walk around my house for a few minutes just because I died on Silver's mess of a boss fight for the 12th time. And yet I still played that mess to the end, I literally couldn't really give myself a real reason to try to pull myself away from that monstrosity other than that the game was bad or that it made me mad. I honestly could see myself trying to play it again now that I actually know what to do with it. I just dislike the fact it's broken beyond repair.

Fantasy life. It's one of my favourite games but thinking about it makes me really upset and annoyed now since they put the second game on mobile, with no hope of it ever coming back to become a real game, whether on 3ds or home console. It really ruins the way I feel about the game..

Oh man, sims 4 for p much the exact reasons OP stated. It's so lackluster, and yet I still have nearly every pack. :/

Another one for me is actually Harvest Moon.... I love Harvest Moon (Or Story of Seasons, now, I guess) and I always have. Some of the games are really great and I've been able to pour hours of my life into, and I still find myself coming back to them again and again. And then there are some that just... feel like they're lacking so much. Specifically, I'll be honest, it's the handheld ones that I find so lackluster. I think the console versions have such memorable art styles, character designs, music, and locations, whereas a lot of the handheld ones I've played seem to lack the heart. For example, I still get the Magical Melody songs stuck in my head all the time, but I couldn't hum a single note from any of the handheld ones I've played. Idk, maybe it's just me, because I know a lot of people who do love the DS versions, but i can't help but think of them as a big step backwards. But of course, who knows, maybe I'm just blinded by nostalgia.

devil may cry

i love it but it doesn't love me and my slow reflexes lol

Pokemon. ;A; Don’t get me wrong, I love it, and I likely always will, but the grinding/leveling gets so tiresome! It was particularly bad in Sun/Moon/US/UM, imo. It makes it a chore to play, instead of it being something fun.

Also Pok?mon for me - except for AS, I don't think I've enjoyed any of the 3DS/Switch games - I can't remember anything about XY except that the storyline was too short; SM wasn't great, and while USUM actually fixed the story of SM, it was still just the same story but with minor changes; and Let's Go! was just RGBY for the THIRD time (fourth if you count the Virtual Console versions). I'm still nostalgic about it, but I'll probably give up on it forever if SwSh is bad.
