As in, did you keep restarting your town until you got a specific thing in it? Like a certain starter villager, a certain color of town hall/train station, certain fruit?

I'm super picky when I make my towns. I had to have the plaza in the middle of the map, apples as the fruit, and a green town hall/train station (because my village is nature themed, it seemed to fit). Surprisingly it only took me 2 hours to get my specific conditions, and I'm super happy!

I mainly wanted the town plaza and Re-Tail both near the train station and a shorter river. I'm pretty satisfied with what I got this time around, although I did have to reset a few times.

I always prefer to not have thin strips of land but I do have one in my one town just to see if I could stand it. I will never pick a town with a secluded beach. I prefer a vertical lower ramp but it's not a requirement. I only like retail up next to my gate, either side, but I don't like it when it isn't up there so every town I have has retail up top. I don't mind my plaza and town hall being near each other but don't like either of them to be near retail. I usually have a fruit in mind when I'm searching for new towns but it's not always make or break. With my main town I just didn't want oranges as that's what I'd had before, I got peaches so that was all good. I have a friend with apples so I like to have each other fruit in my four towns so we can both stay stocked on perfect fruits for gifts and for selling purposes.
I don't do a lot of other things for myself besides ac, so I'm super picky about picking a town cuz I spend a lot of time in them and if I can't be happy there it's just not really worth it.

With my first I just took what I was given and ran with it, but with my second I wanted it to feel bigger and I wanted apples as a starter fruit... I got pears and was going to reset but I fell in love with my villagers (Muffy, Eunice, and Lucky were starters and I got Marshal and Amelia within the next couple days) so I couldn't bring myself to restart. My 'perfect' town now has pears, ugh, but other than that I wouldn't change a thing.

I feel like I wasn't too picky with my town. I wanted a Re Tail close to the train station, south facing waterfall, vertical ramp from the dock to the beach, and I really wanted two ponds close together for a little park area. I was less picky about my other stuff, I wanted cherries as my fruit, but I got apples and I wanted triangle grass, but I got square grass, but I figured it wasn't worth resetting over. I was really lucky with my train station too, I got the brown one and I actually hate all the other colors >.< I'm actually very happy with my map, the only thing is that my town hall is in front of my town plaza so it's a tiny bit awkward but I've made so much progress that I don't think it bothers me enough to reset.

My only qualification was to be able to get to both of my beaches and to have a south facing waterfall because it looked pretty. It was my first ever Animal Crossing game so I didn't realize how many options you could have had at the beginning. I am quite satisfied with my town though.

I wanted my retail and town hall close to each other and near the dock and three ponds at the most.

Well, in my first town, I was super confused. I named my town "FunWorld" as I couldn't think of anything, and then I just picked the first map I saw, as I was confused lol. It actually turned out to be an amazing map.

In my cycling town, I reset it until I could get a good map, and fairly popular villagers/villagers I liked, because all the villagers would be given away.

Few qualifications in the first place, I did not know what to expect because ACNL was the first AC game I ever tried.
For my second town, I wanted a different native fruit from my first.

For my third (cycling) town, I wanted a different native fruit from towns 1 and 2.

Ah..I was really picky about how my town started out, took me literally hours to find the "perfect" one. Firstly, I was looking for a town that evenly split in half. It's difficult to explain, but towns with weird land shapes just annoy me. Also, I'd want the re-tail shop to be fairly close to the beach so it would be a quicker process to sell shells and anything from the island. Then after that's good, I see which villagers I got. This part ruins everything for me because if I found the perfect town, but the villagers look terrible..I gotta start over from the beginning. I have literally no motivation to keep playing if my villagers are terrible. But that's just me, I don't know about everyone else

I picked the first map I saw. Never looked back.

Same. And I've had that town since July 2013. I feel like everything is perfect exactly where it is.
When I got a second cartridge I reset a few times, not for the map, but to get at least one villager I liked.

I really wanted open space and for my retail, town hall and Plaza to be semi spread apart from each other... I hate when things are right on top of each other

let's see... south waterfall, beach on the left, peaches or cherries as a fruit, triangle grass, no private beach or tiny strips of land, and as few rocks and ponds as possible. i think that was it.

got an almost perfect one on the 5th try, but i made it (and still am in) the winter season so i'm not sure about the grass. it also has a thin part at the top but i'm gonna try to work with it. i've gotten worse maps in more tries, so i decided to keep it and i like it a lot so far.

Yes. The main beach waterfall had to be facing forward, not to the side. Also, the villagers needed to contain at least 2 that I liked.

I just picked one from the first three maps that I was shown. I wasn't picky at all since when I started playing, I didn't even know that you could reset. I don't mind, though, I think it's more of a challenge to work with things like a native fruit that isn't what I would have chosen and makes my town feel more individual. I really like my map.

I spend most of my time on the island, so a huge thing for me was to have Retail fairly close to the dock. I also wanted my plaza and my town hall to be further away from each other than in my previous town, and for them to not be jammed right next to the train station. I'm not picky with starting villagers or fruit, but I got pears as my fruit. Blech. There are things I would change, though; I have a private beach which while I'm not very fond of, I like the idea of having it as I can put some story around it. But overall I think that my map is close to perfect <3

Not much.

Wanted to make sure all beaches were accessible.

Also wanted to have retail and town hall close to plaza.

Last and probably most important, I wanted to have a logical spot to place my house down.
