You could trade some things, start a garden with hybrids or something like that? Lots of people on this site are willing to give both tools, hybrids to start up with and other things! You can also visit other towns?

There's lots of things to do. Believe me, the game gets more fun and exciting the more you play. You get to place public works projects, design your town how you want, bond with your villagers, dress how you want, make your own designs, garden, fish and catch bugs to make bells, take nightly trips to the island for big bells, expand your house, go on island tours (they're like minigames), go diving, dig up fossils, donate stuff to the museum, vist other towns using the Dream Suite, visiting other towns using wifi or side by side... As you play, all of that will gradually unfold, trust me it gets better...
I agree, once you have the game a while there is plenty more to do. The first day I got it, I was bored within an hour. Once you get more stores, more villagers, more bells, unlock stuff, etc, you'll find plenty to work on. You can also start thinking about what you want to do with it in the future, like paths, tree placement, etc.

I'd also look up some let's plays of new leaf on youtube! Watching them showed me some new things I could do in the game and also introduced me to some dreamies.

Start working out your layout of your town, your theme. Then I would start working out which villagers you want...?

Youtubes are a good place to start. There should be one there that shows you how to fix your island to make the most bells.
Take a picture of your island before you take it apart. It will come in handy when you want to put it back the way it was.
Also checkout Thonkys Guide for information. Good information for the holidays. There are a lot of blogs on how to make Hybrids.
Invite someone over with a golden axe to help chop some of your trees down. The axe doesn't last long. Getting some trees out of the way is helpful. Some people have cleared their whole town of trees and than planted the trees where they wanted.
Since your town doesn't have a lot of house or PWP this is a good time to make snow people. Lots of room to make them.
It's harder when your town is developed.

When a new villager is going to move in, you set the clock to 5:57 am and save, then you create a new file. The new character will not be saved(your town won't be saved) until you pick a place for a house. So you have time town to check where the new house is
if you don't like the villager/spot, then you can turn of your game and try again5129-1108-3150 <-- that's my friend code, let me know when you are online
