Mine was the freshwater goby. Two times I failed to get the fish and the last request it took 90 minutes.
In my summer town a visiting player from my spare town just needed a hammerhead shark. She caught a lot of whale sharks and other sharks. 2.5 hours later the game finally gave one up.
It feels like this always happens. For example, when a villager asks me to catch a butterfly, 90% of the time it's during the night, so it's way harder to actually find one. It's like the developers are just trying to troll us, oh wait, they always do!
Murphy's Law of ACNL. You need a loach, pale chub, crucian carp, sea bass, horse mackeral, smelt and all the sudden NOPE NOT FOR YOU NEVER! The most prolific of fish up and vanish when we need them most.

They ask me for the most common fish and all of sudden they're rare to catch! Like what the heck? It's pretty annoying.
This happens to me too, but most of the time it doesn't take me that long to find what they want.
Most of the time I just tell them I'll do it then forget and never do it.
