2nd for me, Johto just always holds a special place for me. Even though Gen 1 was my first, it felt like "Wow I know what I'm doing and what's going on, this is great, everything looks so much better than Red/Blue/Yellow, and you can catch a couple things I couldn't in Blue version in this game!" (cause I had red version) when I played Silver as a child. The HG & SS remakes were very nice too imo.
I'd have to go with gen 5, as I feel that the story was the strongest in those games. They had, in my opinion, the best rivals, the new pokemon were okay (not horrible), and I liked N's Backstory.
Gen 1 I don't like saying because it feels more like nostalgia and importance than genuine favorite...Actually, that's exactly what it is because I struggle to play the games these days.
Aside from the EXP share added in VI, I liked everything.
- I feel that the graphical update helped a lot here, especially since it feels to me like how I always thought Pokemon games were supposed to look. It's sort of like 'playing the anime'.
- The updated graphics made the world seem more 'alive' and 'impressive' than previous games.
- The story, whilst with it being Pokemon wasn't spectacular, was better than most in my opinion.
- It gave access to a wider selection of Pokemon from different gens on your first playthrough, and since I actually only 'love' very few Pokemon across each gen, this was the first one where I was able to almost have all my favorites from the start (Shinx being the only exception -.-)
- Customization. I've wanted this since Gen I and we finally got it like 20 years later...Only for it to go away with the next game.
3, it was the first games I really got into and could do well on without a friend to trade with. It seemed like the first two were more reliant on trading.
I really liked Gen II. I dunno why...I started playing in Gen I, but Gen II is just special for some reason. I think it's because it had plenty of post-game content (being able to go to Kanto), and was the first generation where the champ got involved in the plot (Lance).
The starters were great because they stayed a single type. Yea, it meant less STAB moves, but I enjoyed restarting my copy of Silver to try out each of the three starters (I believe my first playthrough was with Totodile).
Gen I holds a nostalgia value, but that's about it. If one can play the remakes (FR/LG), they're much better and fix many of the problems, glitches, and poor sprite designs the first games had.
Gen III...give and take. There are things I like about it, and things I hate about it.
Gen IV was tough (Platinum version, at least; the only nuzlocke I lost thanks to Cynthia and her Garchomp), but it wasn't anything spectacular in story or characters.
I'll admit, I liked the story in Gen V. If running it wasn't so difficult (as a nuzlocke, since training up pokemon is such a painful grind even with audino), I'd probably replay it more. The story was excellent, as were the characters.
However, I'm only talking about the original B/W. The sequel to it did nothing for me.
I think Gen VI would have been better if the story focused on AZ instead of on Lysandre/Team Flare. They had great potential with AZ's story, and they blew it with a stereotypical antagonist. So, can't say I enjoy Gen VI's story or characters too much (that, and being interrupted with forced dialogue from the others, or holo clips, gets very annoying).
So, in the end, I had to go with Gen II (which I'd also replay more if it was easier to level up; the biggest drawback is that Gen II has probably the worst level curve of all of the games).
I was prepared to make A 'hurr hurr unpopular opinion' statement about my love of gen IV but I see I'm not alone. HGSS are my favorite games and DPPt aren't far behind. I loved Sinnoh and the only thing I'd change would be the text speed. I tried to play Pearl a few weeks ago and it was excruciating.
Unova is probably my least favorite, then Hoenn because 7/10 too much water, Kanto because despite my ever-loving nostalgia it was a bit bland, Sinnoh because it wasn't very rememberable but I liked it, Johto because it had nice folklore, and surprisingly... Kalos takes number one. I know that a lot of people don't agree with me, but Kalos was a beautiful game. I loved the European flair and I'm excited to see even more cultured games in the series since we've already knocked down France, Japan & Isles, and East America.
I was really into pokemon as a kid and played red and blue in most of my spare time and collecting the cards the rest of the time. But gold and silver really did it for me. A whole new region to play in plus the previous region, two new types, tons of really awesome new pokemon. Kind of the typical list of things you get in new pokemon games now a days but gen 2 was the first to do that.
Gen 1 is still pretty high on my list but I think my list is something like..
Generation I all the way baby. Slowpoke, Slowbro, Mewtwo, Lavender Town are all the reasons I need. I remember Blue was the first text based game I ever played. Although I was illiterate at the time. I also remember opening up Red on my 5th birthday and thoroughly enjoying Red and Yellow the most as a kid.
Generation V for sure! It was my first time that i really was addicted to pokemon, my very first pokemon was diamond but at the time i could only read and speak dutch. Also i liked black so much also because of the giant amount of new pokemon! It still is the biggest addition to date. Even more than the original 151! (Not sure if it was 151, i am not that much of a pokemon prof.)
