Currently restarting a ton for a good layout for my new town, but I'm not 100% sure what I should be looking out for. I am mostly looking for something I like, but I want to know what else I should look for.

Personally I like
A short river
Not many ponds
Not many rocks

And when picking a map I think of where I'll place the main buildings at.

Something to consider, but I personally like having ponds to have near my home. I am however trying to find a somewhat smaller river. So far nothing decent has popped up.

Oh.. and how many rocks is respectable for a town?

Well my first town has about nine rocks and like 3-4 rivers. All of which are in the way. My other four town I have about 5 rocks and 1-2 ponds. Just for me it makes it easier to landscape.

personally the easier the town map looks to navigate the better to me :) I don't really want to bend over backwards just to get from one place to the other. I have like two ponds by my house and a few rocks here and there but they sort of accent it all.

Hmm, all right. I'll aim for around 6 rocks and 2 ponds that are close together for my layout. Thanks!

I personally like a river that splits my town in half horizontally, and a fair enough space of land to fit all of my 'business' buildings like Town Hall, Cafe, and Police Station. I don't like split beaches, either, but rather one long beach with maybe a really tiny short one in the corner or something. I hope you find a map you can be happy with. :3

I really like the waterfall that comes to the front of the town, really pretty!! Otherwise yes, I like to split my town horizontally in half as well!

Heh, still looking.

I found one good lay out, but it had 8 rocks all in really bad areas. It really was a shame since it had one of my dream villagers in it, too! :(

Chief has always been my favourite Villager since Animal Crossing: Population Growing. Looks like an adorable but cranky fox and I love foxes. <3

Random question: Are the town rocks a set amount or a random amount? I seem to be getting a lot of good layouts but they always seem to have 8 or 9 rocks..

I didn't know that the number of rocks could vary. My towns have always had seven, so that's just what I assumed every town came with. x)

Mmm.. I guess I should let the quantity of rocks bother me, just the location of said rocks. XD

So I did manage to find a really great layout about 3 minutes ago, but I failed to realize I misspelled the town name. <_<;;

today i restarted my cartridge and i wanted a map with everything i was looking for-
front facing waterfall
central plaza (not necessarily central on the map, but central on the piece of land it was on)
town hall & re-tail close to edges of map
good spots for homes (villager and mayor/resident)
ample space for cliff diving
front facing beach entry
secret beach (pref. large)
2-3 ponds
river with a little nook for a house

if i were you i would pick a bunch of stuff i like and reset until i get exactly what i like because as picky as i am i did in fact get a map that met all my standards. when i restarted other times something would always be off like ponds or beach entry direction and it'd bug me until i restarted again. never settle! your map is out there.

Hmm, I'll see what I come up with using some of this!

I like to have a long continuous beach, which is usually accompanied by a small strip of private beach. For some reason I just find a long beach convenient?
