What is the downside of having a mayor and a second character in your town?

Hello Everyone!

I know the benefits of having a mayor and a second character in one town. But what are actually the bad side effects of this? I want a second character for storing items (and to unlock Katrina sooner and being able to use wish twice a day, 2 birthday's I don't care about, because I will only play on the second character to pick up stuff I want to store there).

Hope someone knows about what's bad about having 2 characters on one map! Thanx in advance,

Elsa

(I have the physical copy of New Leaf Welcome Amiibo)

The villagers will sometimes talk about the other character. People find that annoying sometimes, especially when it's "I haven't seen xx in SO LONG!" over and over.

But other than that, I find it only advantageous to have a second character. You have more storage spaces, more QR/design storage slots, another whole house that you can decorate however you want, the ability to unlock Katrina faster, you can get more MEOW coupons per day, etc.

the only bad thing i could think about is the mortgage, having to pay the 7 million all over again lmfao to me at least, I know people been wanting to have more mortgage in order to enjoy the game so it depends on you

other than that, making a second character was the best decision I've ever made tbh so definitely go for it

Yeah that's the annoying part imo, but if villagers only do that I can certainly live with that! Thank you for your quick response!

LOL I don't care about having to pay more for more storage and all the benefits you both said, so I've made up my mind and just go for it, thnx alot!

If you're going to play seldom using them, I suggest putting a wig on them (so, no bed hair annoyance over and over) and having beautiful town so you won't get cockroaches on their house. :)
Over all, it's very nice having more than one character, I have three in both my towns and would have four, but I need the plot reset space. :)

It is possible to avoid. Just don't meet any villagers on your second character, don't make them talk at all. I'm doing this with both of my side characters and I had no problems. For Isabelle's tips I just did let them talk to a temporary villager and that was it.

Smart, that hair is indeed not looking great at all lol. Luckily I have friends with shampoodle so my major will get a hair change asap! Only on my second character for Katrina and storage and maybe decorating. (Now doing HHD and than going to look for a map of my likings, lol, that will take at least a whole Day) And indeed, plot resetting I'm also planning to do, so ty for the reminder!

Thanks for the info, I always find it kinda sad for the animals to ignore them but this time I will do that. Another really useful tip, thnx alot!

For me the only issue would be the fact that they'll take space in the town that you'd like to use for stuff like pwps, orchards, or possibly flowers. For this 1 reason I don't use a second character and only have my mayor.

ii just recently made my 2nd character and its been the Best Decision ive made!!! soooo much more space to store stuff that ii need to be held that ii cant keep in my Mayors House.. the only thing ii guess id say not a downside bht kinda sucks that you cant interact the Mayor and 2nd Character.. and you cant go into the 2nd Char. House for stuff, like my Myor paid for the house and paying to upgrade it, why cant she go in and take/put things in it? lol jk.. bht yea great thing, im deciding on whether to make a 3rd, bht ii honestly dont like any of the spots that are available :/ so im going to have to wait til someone moves out and take that spot

This is what has been holding me back. However, I now have the mayor's house decorated almost exactly how I want it, but there are so many other options and amazing furniture to display. I have got themed exhibit rooms in the museum, but I have more ideas to play with for room decoration. The second mortgage (set of mortgages?) is a bit daunting, but it doesn't all need to be paid off immediately - the rest of the town is all a (slow) work in progress ;)

It seems like this thread might make up my mind for me about adding a second character :)

Mine as well, I was always on the fence until reading this thread and now I kind of would like to create another.

I don't see any disadvantage to having a 2nd & 3rd character (as said the 4th place is worth keeping empty for plot resetting, if you might want to do this - I tend to play almost legit - but I got upset by a villager placing their house in front of the bridge linking dock to R-Rail & changed my mind about it).

Other characters are useful for storage, helping in some of the events, (you can play most events with all characters not just the Mayor), spare carpets off Saharah; you might get offered more than one genuine art by Redd, and for hastening getting Katrina's shop (for the 1st time I tried making a NSF to get the fortune read, delete & do again - and it was way too much bother, no way, would rather just have the fortunes read by the characters I do have till I get the 20 needed for the shop - fortunes given to visitors do not count towards your shop).

I don't fully enlarge 2ndary characters houses - I keep them small. just have the upper room (to get the secret storage option) & the basement - if you do this the exterior of the house remains small with no dormer windows. (ie I don't put in any of the side rooms off the main room).

Edit:I fully enlarge the 2 rooms I do put in - (basement & upper room) and that does not affect the outside look of the house. Plus I put the houses in out of the way spots, I've not had an issue with town space. If you make a mistake/want to use the house space for something else later on, delete the character & put elsewhere (take its savings/storage 1st), at least they are not permanent.

That's good information! If I create my second character I will have to remember this about the house! I like the idea of having a small looking house for the extra characters. Thanks for posting this!

I don't really see a disadvantage. I hear people get annoyed that villagers talk about them a lot, but I mean do you want villagers to be lonely and just talk about you and a few people lmao, and it's just a small thing compared to the convenience with the additional space you get and QR codes. Not to mention, you can be super creative with their houses. Either being a restaurant or an inn that you can fully design -- which PWP does not offer. It would add charm to your neighborhood.

Personally, I can’t have a 2nd or 3rd player JUST for storage because their tiny empty house will always bug me. I’d only get one if I know I am going to decorate their house, or if I know they are just temporary for plot resetting. Interior decorating is my favourite part of the game so this has never been a problem for me. I would say my biggest annoyance is them getting messy hair from not playing for long periods of time. I’m not a big item collector either and most of my “nice items” (lol) are in my mayor’s locker, but sometimes I’ll have specific items or unorderables stored in other character’s lockers so it’s annoying finding specific things and going through all 3 of my alts. I don’t see myself organizing the items anytime soon, so this will always be a problem for me.

like others have been saying, i don't really think there are any disadvantages to having an alt character. you get lots more storage space, and a whole new house to decorate, or like @Underneath The Stars said, you could turn it in to something like a restaurant to add some variety to your town!

also, once you have completed everything with your mayor (encyclopedia, shrunk emotes, catalogue, badges etc) you could always go through and try to complete them all with your alt character too to add some more interest to the game, although this is something i would never do myself as i am not that dedicated haha.

Thanks everyone for responding, I do have another question. I have the physical from welcome amiibo and plot resetting doesn't! work! On what kind of things do villagers build there house? For example where trees are and the game just takes the trees away? On the bushes that gives you flowers each day, do they work or will they also move there? Hope anyone knows this, since I'm starting from scratch and not with the old physical from. new leaf. Thanx again!

(I have 10 villagers due to time traveling btw) I'll just copy paste this in a new thread.

Plot resetting works on cart and the digital version.
I have several games, they are all physical copies, my experience of digital is zero.

The game saves as you load, you cannot change the plot location once you have loaded with an existing character, hence to plot reset you need to start with a New Save File (NSF).

How you plot reset depends on how you change time (tho I think you could do without changing time, would have to think that thru).

If you change time with Isabelle at the front screen its a bit more tricky as you cannot change the time with the NSF. You have to load an existing character 1st to do so, prior to the start of the new day.

If you change time within system settings before you load the game you can start the new day (whenever you wish) with the NSF - so long as the 1st load of the day is with the NSF.

If you like what you see with the NSF then you save with that NSF character - that is essential. If you don't then when you load with an existing character the plot location may well have changed.

If you don't like what you see, then just reset without saving and start a NSF again (ie you have to go thru the Rover scenario on the train again).

Villager plots can take out trees, bushes & flowers. They can take out pathways if there is not enough space elsewhere for the house to plot.
You can make plot resetting easier if you tile (put down patterns) where you definitely do not want a house to plot.

If you google on plot resetting you will come up with many threads that will help., the above is the bare bones.

Reddit. says it doesn't work on welcome amiibo, they patched it out. So I really don't know what to do, since I have the physical of welcome amiibo...
