What if Nintendo gave us the option of having a playable character with it's own name, appearance, backstory, birthday and personality while still giving the option to create one from scratch?

Frankly, Animal Crossing is know to not have an actual main character and the player is rather bland if compared to the many animal villagers in game.

The only exception would be certain comments about bugs, fish caught, etc.

that would be pretty cool imo

i would probably still create all characters from scratch tho lmao

If you mean a preset character with a pre-determined background, I'm not really sure. I think what makes AC somewhat immersive is the ambiguity of the player character. I mean it's not intended to be serious in any way, and I don't think I could ever take it seriously, but I like just having my character as a derpy no one lol.

I think a more defined creation tool would be welcome though. Something that allows us to select our appearance, and maybe even some background details as you suggest that could trigger some interesting dialogues with villagers and other characters, that would be really neat.

the sims series is famous for that well... every time I start a new game first thing I do is getting rid of all the preset characters ^^

so no preset character in AC thanks

Maybe we could choose a skin color, and then instead of tanning we'd just get sunburn.

i'd love this
although i wish you could like... buy sun tanning lotion or something so you can choose whether or not you'd get sunburnt (for like 400 or 500 bells), and limit the amount that you can tan (ie: can't start with the lightest skintone and then tan to the darkest one because it's not realistic)

i think that to be a "complete playable character" without losing the ambiguity that creates the immersion of the game, we could choose basic customization features (like in HHD), set our bday, and maybe choose which family members we'd like to receive mail from (like, i might choose my mom and dad still, but someone else might choose their grandmom and sister or something)... small things like that would let us create some backstory while still letting us... make our own path? or something

The next game should have more character appearance options, but part of the game is that your character is whatever you want it to be. Having characters with defined stories and personalities would take that away and make it feel like you have less control. You as the player would become more of a passive observer instead of an active participant which is the whole point of the game.

I think it would be good if the villager dialogue was more dynamic based on your responses to their questions. Like if villagers brought your responses up in later conversations and asked additional questions about it to create more dialogue paths. The way it is now, a villager just asks you a random question and gives you a response based on your answer and never brings it up again (or will just ask the exact same question again and again). Having more dynamic conversation paths would help you create a backstory as you talk to your villagers.

Yeah, I'd like to have the HHD style of skin+hair+eye color choice, maybe some things like who sends you letters, but I don't want too much character in my character because this isn't really an RPG, it's Animal Crossing. I like being able to play a tiny version of myself or to play someone else.
