What happens if you try to move in a villager that you already have?

Do they refuse?
Does your game crash?
Do they act like they already know you?

I'm really wondering even though I'll probably never NEED the answer to this question...

I don't know but my guess would be they just wouldn't agree to move to your town.

I think they do they same dialogue they'd have if your town was already full. I doubt they'd recognize you- my friend and I both have Maelle, but his Maelle didn't know me when I introduced myself.

Oh wow, I was hoping that'd be a little more exciting...

Though wouldn't it be cool if they made it so the same character in a different village recognize you?
