Everyone appears to have a different style when it comes to designing residential areas and villagers yards. I'd love to hear/see what you guys have done or are planning to do with yours!

Initially, my houses were going to be very close together to save space. I quickly realised this wasn't necessary and wanted to make them cute little yards instead. I am currently in the process of moving every single villager plot to give them a 9×8 plot to put a few items, bushes and flowers. It's about as painful as you'd expect as I don't time travel.

EDIT: just noticed this thread already exists. I am blind. Mods feel free to lock this <3

i just have a little unorganized area around my villagers’ houses to decorate, since i don’t really liked using fences or following strict grids too much o:

I have my villagers close but not too close together. I am thinking of giving them more space and having their own little areas with more individuality instead of the boring cookie cutter way I went 😅

I have them in two rows and in two tiers. 4 at sea level, then 6 up one level above. it helps having them all bunched together for convenience sake, and i still left enough space to give them all personalised yards which was very important in my mind lol

I have mine together and in tiers as well. 4 at sea level with a little park (these have now coincidentally ended up all the same style of house, which I love) then 3 directly above them, then 2 directly above that, then 1 behind those with a pool area in between.
As with many coastal areas the houses higher up are fancier as they have great views - it happened to work out that my snooty and cranky villagers are up there and they have nice fancy looking houses.

I don't have a residential area! I just put the villager houses in places where it seemed they flowed well or didn't block the view, trying to distribute somewhat evenly over the different island sectors in my map. Like a neater version of old ACs. Sometimes I regret this, because it probably looks chaotic to other people, and you can get a lot of space back by putting the houses near each other.

All of them have outdoor decor as well.

Most of my villagers live towards the back of my island on the 2nd or 3rd levels. There are some on the first level and there's Audie who lives on the beach since she has summer vibes haha. I try to give each little residential area their own theme. For example my jocks are placed right next to each other by the outdoor gym. I like to have space between each villager and not group everyone into one general area.
