What do you look for in a map?

i was pretty picky about my town map and whatnot.
it took a little bit of resetting, and despite the lousy starter villagers (who ultimately moved out) i'm pretty happy about my layout .

geographic features :
both beaches are on the leftish middle side, accessible and almost evenly cut
not too many ponds
town hall and plaza to be near each other ( preferably above / below one another )
a cozy area by a river bend or where the river empties into the ocean for my house

town features :
native fruit is apples
blue or brown station
blue or brown town hall
square or triangular grass

Why does it seem like no one likes oranges? 3:
I really like oranges... But then again, it's my class color so I may or may not be biased haha.
Or is it that you just don't want to grow Perfect Oranges as your only perfect fruit? Hmm, lol

I wish I had taken a little more time thinking about my layout. I would have liked a more winding river, for instance.

I mostly took into account my villager placement, though. I noticed I had everyone on one side of the river and went, "Yes!" It isn't quite so perfect now, but mostly, everyone is still on that side of the river. It's nice. :'D

I've come to appreciate my layout for other reasons. It's nice to have Re-Tail only a few squares from the dock so when I go beetle catching on the island, I can run back and forth and it doesn't take long to sell everything.

If I can ever get a second copy of the game, I'll be pickier. I would like my town hall in a better location. I want to have peaches or cherries, I can't decide which. I want a winding river next time, too.

Here's my rules for resetting:
- not too much ponds
- linear river
- good house spreading
- blue Town Hall
- good starters(the most important rule, if I got bad villagers even w/good layout I'll reset)

When I first got the game and booted it up, I knew nothing. All I wanted was a left to right/right to left river.

All I really wanted was a bend in the river that I could make into the Mayor's manor -- using carefully positioned street lamps to block anyone from moving in. With that in place, I lucked out and got my Retail, Town Hall, and Tree all located in the upper right corner near each other so I made that into my "downtown" area -- my cafe will go there as well when it unlocks. I got circle grass by accident, which is nice, and the upper left corner was perfectly sized to put my three alt houses together in a row.

I like a meandering river that makes a "U" turn, so I can put my mayor's house right there, and that is what I have done in both of my towns. As few ponds as possible. That's all. :)

Good villagers and lots of space for PWP's. I'd like to have a spot for a beachside house though.

i am fines with anything!

my village was the very first one they gave me!

if i do ever make another town it will be whatever one they give me next!

any villager is welcome to come and go, wherever they want, whenever they want!

When resetting for a village the things it must/must not have are:

Must have straight river
Re-Tail must be somewhat close to the pier
Must have at least 2 villagers I can get along with
Must not have Cherries

The only thing I don't like about my new town (my 3DS died and my digital copy of AC was lost so I have to start over T.T) is that the plaza is in the top right hand corner. It's a horrible place but I'll be able to live with it, I got Lolly and Willow with no hideous villagers.

I usually look for places where I'll put my houses. Like a place near the waterfall or a cliff or a river bend.
Then placement of the Town Hall and Retail.
Must be Apples or Peaches. Green or blue train station. Any Town Hall except the one with the brown roof and yellow bricks. I don't mind the grass or first villagers.

I've reset quite a few times since the game came out, but I actually have the town I think is best for me now.

I've actually decided to create a challenge for myself, since I used to be a serial-resetter. I'm going to keep the first map given to me and work with it, and see how long I can keep it. This should be interesting.

Are you doing the "Deal With It" challenge?

I think I lucked out with my town, as Re Tail is right next to the rails, town hall is slightly south of the train station, and the town tree is in the toprightmost area of town.

When you were choosing your map, what did you look for in your map?

My town has the Plaza, Re-tail, and Town Hall all lined up. I put the caf? above Re-tail and Town Hall like in between them in away.
I have part of the beach so that it is only reachable by swimming and there is a spot where you can dive off the cliff!
The river runs mostly through the center of my town and most of my villagers live on the upper part of the town at this point in time.

I don't have many public works projects done or even unlocked yet.

My first New Leaf town, I reset and reset and reset until I got the "perfect" town... the fruits I wanted, the grass shape I wanted, starting villagers I liked, a town hall I liked, and so on. But after a while... I got totally burned out on that town, because it was too perfect. So I reset, once, and picked 1 of the first 4 layouts that popped up. And honestly, I love it more than I ever liked the "perfect" town, because it has it's own character.

The two things that I do look for is the town tree in front of the town hall, and a starting fruit of pears, because I don't like pears at all and will eventually replant them all with other fruit.

I just kinda want a nice long squiggly river. That's the main thing I look for. Not much else to look for anyway.

I didn't plan out my town, and I'm happy with it. But when I start my second town I want to try resetting for something that: 1) is very different from my main and 2) I absolutely love ^__^

Here's what I'll be looking for:

-horizontal river this time
-Town hall and Event Plaza lined up (preferably centrally located)
-Retail either by the docks or by the train tracks
-no more than two ponds
-apples as native fruit (I love how perfect apples look ^^)

Though I'd be willing to compromise on the fruit, Retail and ponds if I had really great starting villagers :) But definitely not if it's pears again- I wanna be able to trade with myself XD

Apples
Circles
Less than 2 ponds
Town tree NOT in the corner/next to cliff
Re-Tail close to dock
No private beaches
A nice river layout
An alleyway to my house

Surprisingly, I found my dream map!
