What do you look for in a map?

well for a good map id say nothing to awkward plus you'll need room to place projects so good river layout the villagers yo wont know till u get of the train the beach depends i like mine on right.

I didn't actually look for anything in my town layout. I took the first one I found. I know, bad move, but I didn't delve into the world of AC until after I got my game, so I didn't do anything important, like decide on the face or restart for good starters. Now I don't want to reset my town because I'm so far in, so I'll just live with the layout I have.

My first New Leaf town, I reset and reset and reset until I got the "perfect" town... the fruits I wanted, the grass shape I wanted, starting villagers I liked, a town hall I liked, and so on. But after a while... I got totally burned out on that town, because it was too perfect. So I reset, once, and picked 1 of the first 4 layouts that popped up. And honestly, I love it more than I ever liked the "perfect" town, because it has it's own character.

The two things that I do look for is the town tree in front of the town hall, and a starting fruit of pears, because I don't like pears at all and will eventually replant them all with other fruit.

the natural fruit your town starts with is the only fruit that can grow perfect in your town.

so you should really choose a town that starts with a fruit you actually like. then you will get perfect fruit!

I started playing the game with the first map I got. As I started playing I realized how much I love it because:

1) It's easy to navigate and there was plenty of room to build all my houses on the same street and the town hall & retail are close enough together that I could create a town center by building the caf? and police station on either side of town hall.

2) There is a perfect little spot up at the top right corner where I built my campsite. I love it there - it's out of the way and still easily accessible.

3) The beach is continuous with access on each end of it. I hate fishing on split beaches - it's such a pain! It's also on the right side and as a "righty" it just feels, well, right!

4) My fruit is apples and I think that perfect apples are by far the prettiest fruit, which is why all the trees in my town are perfect apple trees!

5) I have circle grass which I really like.

6) I have a nice long river that doesn't circle back in on itself. It has a couple of bends but it flows continuously through the town in one direction. I love fishing and this river is really easy to fish in.

7) I like that the plaza is up at the top left corner out of the way. Some people like it centrally located but I don't see why - most of the time it's just empty space and I'd much rather have centrally located houses & shops.

6) There are no rocks or ponds in any spots where I wanted to build something.

I added my town map to my signature. Check it out and let me know what you think. (I drew my paths in white.)

@tolisamarie: Gorgeous town, absolutely love it. It's incredible that you got it first try.

I took the first map I got as well, however my town wasn't created until a couple of days ago (the 30th), so I'm very much behind those who started in, say, June. And I love everything about it.

What I Have & Love:

1) Apples- Personally my favorite fruit in the game. The perfect version is gorgeous. So sparkly and delicious. ^^
2) Triangle Grass- ALWAYS been my favorite grass pattern, since I first got ACCF in 08. But I never have had it before. ): I know it's weird to have favorite a grass pattern, but it truly affects the feel of the town. Squares make the town feel larger, and more spaced out. Circles make the town feel average, and nice. Triangles make the town feel closed, and maybe even a bit smaller, but it gives it a very sweet, cozy feel that I love.
3) Nicely-shaped River- It's really unique, you don't see it often, but it's not knotty or twisty, which is great.
4) Re-tail in a centered location- I love Re-tail, out of all the buildings in the town, I visit Re-tail the most. Beetles, turnips, etc.. I love it centered for easy access from all directions.
5) Plaza hugging a cliff- The only time you use it is on events, or in Dream Suite, so it's nice that it hugs a cliff. Gives dreamers an easier time when it comes to getting around, opposed to having 90 direction options when the Plaza is centered.
6) Town Hall with a view of the ocean- I can't wait to build a bench or a pretty fountain or something to accent this sweet touch.
7) Cute little nook for my house- It's like a literal 'O' shape for my house to fit in. No neighbors can build on my lawn, or anywhere close enough to bother me. ♥
8) 3 ponds- I happen to like ponds, so having more than the general 1 or 2 is nice. Adds charm and character.

Wouldn't change a thing. :3

I chose the second map without thinking. It's fine, but if i had to choose a different one,i'd like :
a private beach
any fruit except pears
a strip of land at the top for my house
not picky. :)

I'm not super picky about my map, but when I started my town, I reset for:
River facing the south
Not a lot of ponds (my town only has 1)
Re-tail near the gate

when i first played acnl i really knew nothing about this game
idk about fruits, grass, strategic location/design of town hall, retail, beach, river, etc
what i remember is that as long i have cats as starter villager haha 8D
i just deal with whatever i got

I got a pretty great map to start with, so that's the one I chose.
I chose it because it had
- apples
- a river with a great place to put my house
- the plaza near the train tracks and train station

The rest I didn't really think about. My only issue right now is where I would put house nr 2 if I'm going to build one.
