I am impatiently waiting for the Dream Suite to unlock in my new town (I miss it more than I thought!), so I thought I'd start this topic to see others' opinions on what makes a good dream town.

- I like seeing villagers from a variety of different tiers in towns! I like many tier 1's as much as the next person, but when you start seeing Marshal/Marina/Stitches/etc. in half the dreams you visit, it gets old. If those are really the villagers that make you happy, then go for it! It's your choice. I'm just speaking from an outsider's perspective.
- I love it when beaches are decorated, especially with pink and orange flowers. I just think it looks so pretty, like a sunset.
- I like when towns are set late at night or in the early morning, just because I rarely if ever play during those times, so it's cool to see a new sky and hear the unfamiliar music.
- For horror towns, I love the surprise creepy room. It's not really a surprise cause it's in a horror town, but I mean, when the rest of the house looks normal, but then there's this one room (usually the top floor or the basement) that's disturbing and makes you rethink the idea of the rest of the house entirely. I love dead perfect trees in horror towns too.

- I hate it when there are a ton of pitfalls. Which is probably the effect they're going for, but I don't like wasting my time falling in them or digging up the x's to make a path for myself...

-I don't like too many flowers. I call these "cluster towns". They're covered in unnecessary bamboo, flowers, paths, etc. It doesn't tickle my fancy when I see so many of them.
-I don't like terrible paths. I'm a fan of the natural path. I have seen awesome path placement but other times...pink paths are terrible unless done correctly.
-I don't like seeing tier 1 dreamies everywhere.

-I do like good PWP placement.
-I do like unique themes or multiple themes.
-I do like when effort is put into a house.

Regarding your "horror" town. I once got a streetpass from someone who has a golden house. I went into every room where there were rare sets in all. I was ready to call it the perfect house until I went to the basement.
3 number 6 lamps and a bunch of skeletons.

- I like seeing a variety of villagers as well. I do understand that folks tend to gravitate towards particular villagers though, and I understand that some villagers are best suited for particular themes.

- I like houses that are themed to look like actual homes or buildings. On the flip side I'm not huge on houses that are just filled with different rooms of different complete series or something. It feels a bit boring.

- I don't like seeing towns that the person really obviously got the dream suite, made a dream address, and stopped playing, though that only usually occurs if I'm visiting random towns for the badge's sake.

- I don't like any sort or horror towns honestly. Attempts to the game feel creepy/scary always felt really contrived to me.

I personally don't like:
-Paths/villagers that I've seen dozens of times
-Disorganized/unneeded plants
-Random items on the ground
-Gold rooms (The light! It burns!)
-Rooms that just have one set and no creativity
-When the rooms look more like storage than actual rooms
-When the dream is updated during the day, but illuminated projects are built
-Villagers living in a straight line
-Patterns around edges of the river or cliff
-Fake grass patterns covering the entire town
-Fake water patterns

Eh, I'm picky.

i didn't even know horror towns were a thing!

kinda wanting to check that out now.

There's a list somewhere that I can't link since it contains censored word, just google An Animal Crossing Horror Towns Masterpost and it should show up! Perfect fof Halloween :)

If there's one thing I hate about, it's pitfalls. I just want to navigate a town peacefully and smoothly without being stuck in a hole 3 times.

I like towns that has a story in it! It makes exploring the town more worthwhile.

There's a long list of them on tumblr! I haven't visited them all, and it's pretty subjective whether or not they're actually scary/creepy, but I think they're fun anyway.
I'm pretty sure the town I had in mind when I wrote about the creepy rooms was Varrock (on the list). That first house. It messed me up.

To add to mine, I don't like when everything in a room is the same color. I don't know why.

Sorry, I didn't realize the link wouldn't work! As Ayaya said, it'll be the first result when you google!

-Random items on the ground

Ugh, same. An outfit, food, or a few fun things like throwing beans I don't mind, but when there are places that just look like a dumping ground, with items I can't do anything with, that bothers me.

I like to see a fun, interesting, nicely decorated town, where i can clearly see what the creator was going for.

I dont like horror towns. No offense to anyone who has one or likes them, i just think theyre dumb. All it is is fake looking blood qr codes and tombstones.

I like themes!
Well other then horror, because its a bit over done.
I went to Lion Town once, a town with just lions, I tend to like stuff like that.

I like it when they leave tools by the bed. So nice and thoughtful :)

I also love towns with a theme or where the colors of the flowers and paths mesh well. Especially like them if they're something other than pastel or just pink pink pink.

- I love towns with a decent amount of trees, fruit trees and bamboo, it gives it such a natural feel and makes it look so lush.
- I like paths, I'm a path-person. Paths also help navigate the town so I 'see' all the things the creator obviously wants to show off.
- I enjoy seeing a variety of villagers from all tiers.
- I love toys to play with, consumable food and drink items, well thought-out clothing (especially if it matches the town theme or weather/season).
- I love houses with really creative rooms using furniture of more than one set. I also like the houses with 'Hotel' and 'School' themes, I think these are really cute, and love how on the map it looks like there's a school or something.
- I like it when people set their Mayor and other characters to say something fun as their comment. There's a very clever user on here (TheGreatBrain) and she has all her towns characters say something cute, it's a really nice touch.

- I personally don't like mazes, whether it be bush or bamboo..they are annoying and often look a bit muddled.
- I love flowers, but flowers everywhere just for the sake of filling space is a bit boring. I LIKE seeing real grass once in a while, lol.
- Not a fan of horror-towns myself, they don't really do anything for me. Plus I find it hard to feel spooked when there are cheerful villagers wandering around wishing you a happy day etc, haha.
- I like items left for dreamers, but like 50 gifts wrapped up in paper are a bit annoying, as they take time to open, plus you've then got to sift through all of them to sort the ones you want to use. The wrapped gifts look so pretty, and it's such a kind idea of the creator to leave though, and very thoughtful, just a little time consuming.

But tbh, I've visited over 250+ dream towns now in my badge quest, and have seen soooo many wonderful ones, and many of them probably had something that I didn't really care for in it, but it didn't spoil my enjoyment at all. Everyone has different tastes, and it's actually just nice to take a break from your own town and experience someone elses :)

I don't really dislike things in dream towns, I enjoy seeing everyone's ideas. If there was one thing I'd say I dislike underdeveloped towns.

Trickilicky, I'm afraid I'm one of those people who have lots of wrapped presents in town, I've used them to decorate my beaches and there's alot lol. However they are all useable things like clothing, accessories and toys like street pass and beans.

Hahaha, Kibble is one of the prettiest towns I have ever been to..the water/galaxy path tiles are some of the best patterns I've seen. So I sat there an opened every gift on your beach because I was having such a nice time there :-D

I like the dreams where people have actually tended to and done something with their town. I like to see the creative side of people. I don't stay in a dream very long if it looks like they still just started the game.

Aww thanks :3, I really like your town as well I've visited a few times. I've noticed towns of TBT users tend to be of high quality.

I love natural looking towns and forest towns. Well placed PWPs are a plus! Bonus points for mushrooms everywhere, I like those.

I don't care much for towns that only have 'popular' villagers. Seeing 3+ tier ones in one place gets boring after a while. I'm also not one for floor patterns, though there are a few exceptions to this.

With the exception of gold rooms (which I'm neutral on), I actually agree with this list really.

I'm not a fan of horror towns because, like molas stated, it often feels contrived. What's worse are the towns that are completely normal, but one room in one house is blocked off at the doorway leading to it. WHAT ARE THEY HIDING!? Creepy villager-picture shrines? Failed taxidermy experiments? Their collection of skin-suits? It weirds me the hell out!

...or it could be they haven't finished the room yet. BUT I'LL NEVER KNOW, and that's scarier than any QR-code blood splatter.

Anyway, most of my stuff's been said already:
I don't like...
  • ...fake grass/water/stair/dirt patterns. Clever, but my imagination doesn't get invested.
  • ...all/most villagers living in a straight line. It can look good and might be ideal for certain themes, but those are rare exceptions.
  • ...pure Zen towns (which exclusively have players and neighbors that have Japanese-styled homes). Yes it looks good, so do the 500,000 other towns that did the same thing.
  • ...a Campsite that's out in the open, surrounded by paths, and/or right next to the Train Station. Yes, because I know when I go camping, I like to set up my tent right in the middle of a parking lot.

I do like...
  • ...SYMMETRY! I know it can't be done everywhere, but sensible symmetry soothes me.
  • ...bordered path patterns/a variety of paths. It takes more slots but looks nicer overall, bonus points for having both plus using natural, grass-bare paths.
  • ...a variety of trees, bushes, and flowers. A field of gold roses does nothing for me. Also, even though only one bush type can be in bloom, it's nice seeing a variety of leaf shapes and shades of green.
  • ...unorthodox, unexpected, or interesting/creative PWP usage. Hard to describe, but I've seen a Wisteria Trellis used at a four-way intersection of paths and Second Streets made from placing the Cafe, Police Station, and streetlights in certain ways.
  • ...a variety of villagers (both in personality and species). On the other hand, single-species towns can be pretty clever, like the "all-sheep" town or the aforementioned "all-lion" town.
  • ...anyone that can do something interesting with the beach. I'm at a loss for ideas with mine, and so it seems do most other people.

I like:
  • More "natural" towns. Not totally natural, but with that kind of feel. It's hard to explain!
  • Interesting rooms in the houses. I'm boring and just use the sets in my houses, so I like to see people being creative. :p
  • Themed towns are always interesting, because you can tell someone put a lot of work into them.
  • When the time is really early in the morning. The music in the morning is so peaceful, it makes it a really pleasant experience.
  • Single-species towns are always fun.

I don't like:
  • When the entire town is covered in a grass or other pattern. Using patterns is fine, but covering the ENTIRE TOWN? Not my favourite.
  • Tons of items gift-wrapped for the dreamer. Just a few is usually best!
  • Gold or balloon-themed rooms! I hate those sets so much.
