Mine are a mix right now. I've got most houses near the plaza for convenience but they're not stuck together so I can decorate around them. Then I've got some villagers who are scattered around the island based on the location that matches them. It's not an issue, but my island isn't hard to navigate and most of them are all on the same level anyway.

I really want to place some houses together in areas with specific looks but I don't know how I'm going to do that (yet). Maybe when I've got more permanent villagers.

i actually made a residential type area for my villagers and ended up pulling it down bc i didn't like it, so now i'm just sticking with spreading them out around the island.

My houses are all clustered together. Which I like. However, I made a mistake in putting my houses too close together. Mine have three spaces between them to the side and just a few spaces out front. I’m going to redo my residential area, And I’m going to keep them together in the same general part of the island, however I’m gonna definitely spread them out. There’s so many creative things people are doing with each villagers house to make them unique. that’s my plan.

I have 2 neighborhoods, with 4 and 6. I tried to theme them on species and house coloring, which worked out pretty well.

I grouped them all together and have them on 3 tiers lol Marshal - Flurry (third tier), Tia - Merengue & Fang - Diana (second tier), Dom - Judy and Sherb - Cookie (first tier). I just can't seem to figure out how I'll decorate the area next to the neighborhood.

I have 4 together with little yards, 2 in my bamboo area and the rest are spread out over the island (Erik's in the woods, Ruby and Tia are on different cliffs and Plucky's on the beach).

Mine are all towards the top right of my island. On the ground level, I have two groups of two villagers. Then as you go up a level, I have one row of 4 and one row of 2. I like it because they’re not totally bunched together, but they’re toward the same part of the island so going between their houses is really easy.

Yeah, I've made that mistake before. I would dig holes so its easier to line the houses up and know how many spaces are around the house when you "imagine" it. I think I allow 4 or 5 spaces in front of each house? But I have mine kind of close together so its easier to see who's home and who isn't. And I agree, people do so many creative things with villager houses, its why I started this thread!

Flowers are always a good way to decorate small areas I've found. They bring a little extra color to the area. You could also set up a little table and chairs with a small item on the table to look like its in use.

That makes a lot of sense. I like that idea, I'm just not sure it will work on my island!

Yeah, I think it’s a mistake to think of the houses as something that “takes up space“, as though you need to sort of stick it somewhere where it won’t interfere with other things. When in fact, it can be one of the more creative, beautiful and fun parts of your island. So I’ve learned my lesson. I’m going to spread out the houses and then make each one individual and try to match the personality of the villager.
