What career did you want when you were a kid?

Artist. It's the first thing I can remember wanting to be. Somewhere along the line, I forgot about it or was dissuaded because it's not a lucrative career. However as I get older, I think there was more wisdom in my desire than I gave credit towards. So even if it's not my "career" per se, I am still trying to live life as an artist, whatever that means.

I wanted to be a paleontologist for the longest time as a kid.
Over time it changed, and then further life happens.

QVC host. From when I was 5-8, I would watch QVC all the time and started to role play being a host. I was even coming up with random item numbers. I even taught myself how to set the VCR clock just to tape different showings on the channel.

I wanted to be a doctor, more specifically a GP, and one of the silly reasons why was that I wanted one of those already inked stamp with my name on it so I could stamp the prescriptions...
But also I wanted to heal people.
But the auto-inked stamps were a nice bonus...

when i was like 4-5 years old, i wanted to become a doctor!! i even dressed up as a doctor for halloween. then i found out what you need to do as a doctor and i ditched that dream :( (i get really queasy around that kind of stuff)

a couple years later i decided i wanted to become a math teacher and i'm currently working towards that dream 🥰

That’s cool! I still watch QVC and every now and then. The cooking and furniture programs are my favorite.

At first I wanted to be a fire fighter, but then I found out they have to go long periods of time away from home for work.

Then my obsession with space began and I wanted to be an astronaut. That dream died once I realized how difficult it is to become one. The fact I ended up not being the minimum height to be an astronaut bums me out sometimes.

Around 5th grade I wanted to become an author since I got interested in writing and was told I should become a writer by all of my teachers (even my high school ones said that). I lost interest in it for a long time since I had no story ideas until fairly recently. It’s a funny coincidence that I’m actually related to an author and never knew.

My fourth career idea was to be a YouTuber (just like everyone else). I was I told I had a nice narration voice, but I knew YouTube paid terribly and was a very oversaturated market.

Finally I spent several years wanting to be a translator for Japanese media. I kept trying to learn Japanese only to finally realize that my brain just doesn't process info on new languages very well and I didn’t enjoy the process.

Now I’m just desperate for any job that will keep me as long as it isn’t customer service related.

I always crack up thinking about how our younger selves picked goals with zero shame. Your singer dream reminds me of how my plans took a left turn too, and now I’m deep into nursing. If you ever get curious about career switches, the Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming a Legal Nurse Consultant is a neat read and shows how random passions can lead somewhere cool over time.

I wanted to be work a ton of different jobs, but the first one was a hair stylist. Idk why since I've never been girly lol.

I wanted to be a veterinarian cause I would love to work with animals but I’m just too dumb to learn such an extensive degree. I don’t really know what I want to do now 🤷🏻‍♀️

Popstar, then Author, then YouTuber lol

I guess I just dream of attention, I don't really want to work. My dream job is a cosy desk job with a greater purpose. Maybe one day I'll desire to write a book.

I wanted to be a veterinarian. I have volunteered with rescue cats the past 4 years and that has been very fulfilling so I don’t need to become a veterinarian (couldn’t afford the schooling anyway or be able to manage it with my mental health difficulties)

Geographer, archaeologist, zoologist, and paleontologist. And I blame it on this book.

There's been a lot of dream careers, but I never actually thought I'd become them, just thought it would be so cool to be them. The first one was a professional artist (lol definitely not happening), another was a singer (even more guaranteed to never become my job, unless I want people's ears to bleed), pilot, fireman, postman (mostly what I still would consider being), social worker, babysitter/creche worker, ballerina/tap dancer (we ask no questions about that one lol), shopkeeper, and author. Astronaut also passed my mind on multiple occasions as being the best job you could have. I also considered being a Garda when I was 12 but when I looked up the requirements I couldn't be bothered lmao. I think the one I thought most about as a kid though was being a doctor/scientist so I could find a cure for a terminal disease a loved one of mine has. It's sad to think about though, because I know even if I went into medicine I'm definitely not the brilliant mind who'll suddenly discover the cure for a life long problem, so I scrapped that dream too.

The most likely job I'll go into from my childhood dream jobs will be working in a supermarket or as a postman. My teachers do get annoyed by my "lack of ambition and motivation" but honestly I would be happy in those roles. I like the idea of a quiet and mundane life

When I was a kid in elementary. I wanted to be a princess. In middle and high school I wanted to be a teacher for the Deaf kids. Unfortunately, college isn't for me so I'm still trying to figure out what I wanna be
